CONWAY, S.C. - East Carolina senior pitcher T.J. Hose tossed a four-hit, complete game shutout to lead the Pirates to a 9-0 victory over Columbia in an NCAA Conway Regional elimination game Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates (40-21) will face the loser of tonight's Alabama-Coastal Carolina game Sunday at 1 p.m. Columbia finished its season with an overall record of 22-30.

Hose (7-4) recorded his first career complete game shutout by retiring 17 batters in-a-row between the fourth and ninth innings. He nearly retired the final 18 batters of the game in order before issuing his only walk with two outs in the ninth. Hose struck out seven and allowed just two runners past second base.

Columbia starter Joe Scarlata (5-5) lasted 2.1 innings allowing six runs (all earned) on five hits with three walks before being lifted for Geoff Whitaker in the third. Whitaker lasted 1.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. John Baumann pitched 4.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits with two walks and four punch outs. Joey Mizzoni worked a scoreless ninth inning, retiring all three batters faced.

Jamie Ray hit his second home run of the Conway Regional in the first inning giving ECU an early 2-0 lead. Senior Harrison Eldridge, who became the school's all-time leader in games played (239), singled to left field on the games first pitch and rounded the bases on Ray's sixth homer of the year.

Corey Kemp's 17th home run of the season extended the Pirates lead to 6-0 in the third inning as he launched a three-run shot over the left field wall. Drew Schieber singled down the left field line to start then frame then took second on Eldridge's sac bunt. Ray plated Schieber with a RBI double down the left field line just before Stephen Batts drew a walk leading to Kemp's at-bat.

Dustin Harrington roped a two-RBI double down the left field line to push ECU's lead to 8-0 in the fifth inning. Brandon Henderson lead off the inning with an infield single which was followed by a Roller single to left field. After a failed pickoff moved the runners up 90-feet, Harrington picked up his 12th multi-RBI game of the season with his base knock.

Henderson drove the Pirates ninth run of the game with a double to left-center that scored Ray from second pushing the lead to 9-0. Ray walked to lead off the frame then stole his second base of the afternoon on Kemp's at-bat moving into scoring position.

GAME NOTES:

  • Attendance: 1,442 (third largest crowd at Watson Stadium).
  • Harrison Eldridge became ECU's all-time leader in games played with his start in center field against Columbia. He has played in 239 career games with 226 starts. He moved into second place on ECU's all-time at-bats list in the first inning when he singled to left field. He has 281 career hits which ranks third all-time. Eldridge laid down a pair of sac bunts and moved into second place on the schools all-time sacrifice chart with 28. He was 2-for-3 on the afternoon and picked up his school record 81st career multi-hit game.
  • Jamie Ray smacked his sixth homer of the season and second of the Conway Regional in the first inning to left field. He extended his current hitting streak to 10 games and now has nine home runs in his career. Ray finished the day going 2-for-4 with three RBI collecting his 41st career multi-hit and 18th career multi-RBI games, while also scoring three runs. Ray also swiped two bases on the afternoon and has 15 stolen bases on the season in 17 attempts.
  • Corey Kemp's home run in the third was the 17th of the season and 22nd of his career. He has 70 RBI on the season (4th-best single-season out put) and has 91 for his career. With his three RBI, Kemp now has 27 career multi-RBI games.
  • Drew Schieber posted his 21 career multi-hit game after going 2-for-6 at the dish.
  • Dustin Harrington recorded his 12th multi-RBI game of the season with his two-RBI double in the fifth. He finished the game 2-for-5 collecting his 22nd multi-hit game of the season.
  • Brandon Henderson recorded his 41st career multi-hit game with a RBI double to left-center in the sixth inning.
  • Every Pirate starter reached base on the afternoon.
  • ECU reached the double-digit plateau in hits for the 38th time this season after pounding out 13 on the day.
  • T.J. Hose moved up the innings pitched charts after working 328.2 innings and is third all-time.
  • Hose's tossed the Pirates third complete game shutout of the season (Justin Bristow - 3/2 vs. Monmouth and 4/26 vs. Presbyterian) and it was ECU's fourth complete game (Sthil Sowers-4/22/08 vs. UNC-Wilmington).
  • With the win the Pirates are 15-3-1 all-time against Ivy League schools and are 1-1 in NCAA Tournament play. The Pirates last game was against Harvard in Orono, Maine on May 23, 1980 losing 7-3 in the first round of the tournament.
  • ECU is 23-45 all-time in NCAA Tournament games.
