GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina's all-time saves leader Seth Simmons will get his first taste of big league Spring Training when the Arizona Diamondbacks open camp on Feb. 7 in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Diamondbacks on Thursday announced that Simmons is among 27 non-roster invitees who will be attending Spring Training. D-backs pitchers and catchers will report to Salt River Fields on Feb. 6, with their first workout scheduled for the following day. Position players will report Feb. 11, and the club's first full-squad workout will be Feb. 12.
A 40th-round selection in 2011, Simmons is coming off a stellar season with the Visalia Rawhide (Class A Advanced) where he posted a 6-2 record with a 2.44 ERA appearing in a team-best 55 games. Following two seasons in the closers role within the organization, Simmons spent 2013 as a middle reliever fanning 106 batters while walking just 30 in 73.2 innings.
Simmons and the D-backs will open Cactus League play on Feb. 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Salt River Fields. The two teams will also meet in the regular-season opening series in Sydney, Australia on March 22-23, kicking off the 2014 campaign.
