ECU Starts Spring With Intra-Squad Scrimmage
Jan. 26, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Billy Godwin, the East Carolina baseball team held its first outdoor practice of the 2013 season Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
After spending the first scheduled practice of the season (Friday, Jan. 25) in the batting cages due to inclement weather in the area, Godwin and his coaching staff guided the Pirates through a three-hour intra-squad scrimmage. On the mound, sophomore Jeff Hoffman and redshirt freshman David Lucroy each toed the rubber to start the afternoon working a pair of innings.
True freshman Justin Taylor and sophomore Dylan Dickens each tossed an inning, while junior college transfer Ryan Williams went 3.2 innings. Others to get into the throwing action on the day were sophomore Tyler Bolton (3.0 IP), senior Joseph Hughes (3.0 IP) and junior Drew Reynolds (2.0 IP).
Offensively the Pirates put up nine total runs with a trio of players lacing RBI doubles in junior Zach Houchins, freshman Luke Lowery and junior Chase McDonald. Junior's Jonathan Holt, Jack Reinheimer and Reynolds all had RBI singles, while freshman Travis Watkins (sac bunt) and sophomore Nick Thompson (groundout) added to the RBI total. Senior Chris Gosik crossed home on a Lucroy wild pitch early in the contest.
The Pirates will begin the 2013 regular season on Friday, Feb. 15 when they play host to nationally-ranked Virginia in the opener of a three-game series at 3 p.m. Godwin welcomes back 21 letterwinners, including 10 pitchers and five positional starters. The Purple and Gold has 13 newcomers (10 freshman and three juniors) on its roster as well.
