GREENVILLE, N.C. - Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Billy Godwin, the East Carolina baseball team held its first team practice of the 2012 season Friday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium as preparation continued for the upcoming campaign.
Godwin and his coaching staff got a glimpse of their 2012 team after a two and a half hour intra-squad scrimmage. On the mound, a quartet of pitchers (Kevin Brandt, Tyler Joyner, Tanner Merritt and Dario Santangelo) each toed the rubber throwing 50 pitches. Brandt was solid in his outing scattering three hits and walking one, while Joyner was equally effective allowing a run in his time on the bump.
Offensively the Pirates pounded out a combined 15 hits on the afternoon scoring four runs with the big blow coming off the bat of Chase McDonald, who took an elevated fastball from Merritt over the left field.
At the conclusion of the practice the Pirate hitters went through 20 minutes of fundamental bunting and base running drills to cap its first official team practice of the spring.
The Pirates will begin the 2012 regular season on Friday, Feb. 17, by hosting UW Milwaukee in the opener of a three-game series at 3 p.m. Godwin welcomes back 21 lettermen, including eight pitchers and eight position starters. The Purple and Gold has 13 newcomers, eight freshmen and five juniors on its roster as well.
