  • FORT WORTH, TEXAS--The Pirates were unable to take advantage of several chances to score early on as TCU shutout ECU 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.

East Carolina falls to 16-11 overall and 2-7 in Conference USA play while TCU improves their conference record to 6-3 and their overall record to 18-10.

Scott Andrews (2-1) started for ECU, allowing one earned run on five hits in four innings of work in a losing effort. The junior lefthander gave way to Mike Flye in the bottom of the fifth after leadoff batter Kyle Dahlberg reached third on an error by leftfielder Drew Costanzo. Flye also threw four innings, allowing two runs, neither of which were earned, on four hits while striking out one. East Carolina committed four errors that lead to three unearned runs for TCU.

The Pirates collected four hits and walked nine times but left 11 runners on base. Dale Mollenhauer was the lone Pirate to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-3 on the day at the plate. ECU's two other hits came off the bats of Mark Minicozzi and Brian Cavanaugh.

Tim McGough (3-0) went five innings for TCU, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out one and walking six en route to the victory. Coming into the contest, McGough had walked just four batters in 25 1/3 innings of work this season. Sam Demel relieved McGough tossing three innings while Shawn Ferguson came on the pitch the ninth for the Horned Frogs.

Andrew Walker, Austin Adams and Keith Conlon each collected two hits on the day. Conlon collected two RBI while Walker and Adams each scored a run.

TCU plated the first run of the ballgame when Walker scored from third when Bo Cogbill hit into a double play with no outs in the top of the fourth inning.

The Horned Frogs took advantage of Costanzo's error in the fifth when Shelby Ford singled home Kyle Dahlberg to give TCU a 2-0 lead after five.

Two Pirate errors kept TCU alive in the bottom of the eighth before Conlon singled through the right side, scoring Adams from third and Cogbill from second, pushing the lead to 4-0.

ECU returns to action Wednesday, April 6 when the team travels to Raleigh to face N.C. State at Doak Field at 7 p.m.
