No. 18 ECU Completes Sweep, 24-13
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Darryl Lawhorn's grand slam in the top of the eighth sparked a 10-run eighth inning as No. 18 East Carolina rallied from a three-run deficit in downing Charlotte, 24-13, to complete the series sweep Sunday afternoon. The Pirates (24-6, 6-3 C-USA) hit five home runs as ECU finished with 19 hits.
Ryan Jones led the Pirates at the plate going 4-for-5 with three RBI including three extra-base hits. Trevor Lawhorn finished 4-for-7 with four RBI. Ryan Norwood and Adam Witter each recorded a pair of hits. Adam Willard led Charlotte going 5-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored.
Kevin Rhodes (1-1) earned the win for the Pirates. Rhodes tossed three innings in relief striking out three while holding the 49ers to three runs. Adam Mills took the loss for Charlotte after surrendering three earned runs in one inning.
ECU loaded the bases in the top of the eighth. Darryl Lawhorn's grand slam cleared the bases and put the Pirates ahead, 13-11. Billy Richardson's RBI single pushed ECU ahead, 14-11. The Pirates loaded the bases once again in the top of the eighth. Ryan Jones tripled in three more runs to make it, 17-11. Trevor Lawhorn's two-run home run gave the Pirates a 19-11 lead.
The 49ers added a run in the bottom of the eighth pulling within, 19-12.
The Pirates tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth to go on top, 24-12. Adam Witter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Mike Harrington drove in two more runs and Trevor Lawhorn singled in another run. Charlotte scored once again in the bottom of the ninth making for the final score.
ECU trailed, 7-6, heading into the top of the fifth. Mark Minicozzi's solo homer, his seventh of the season, tied the game, 7-7.
Spencer Steedley led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple down the right field line and later scored on a wild pitch putting the 49ers ahead, 8-7. Charlotte extended its lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth on Kris Rochelle's RBI double and Jamie Rusco's run-scoring single.
Norwood's double down the left field scored Darryl Lawhorn pulling ECU back within, 10-8 in the top of the seventh. Adam Witter's RBI single plated Norwood making it, 10-9.
Adam Floyd's first home run of the season extended the 49er lead to, 11-9, in the bottom of the seventh.
East Carolina wasted no time and chased Charlotte starter Matt Landphair out of the game with six runs in the top of the first on Ryan Norwood's two-run home run and Adam Witter's solo homer. Trevor Lawhorn's double drove in Jamie Paige for the first run of the game. Ryan Jones scored on Mike Grace's RBI single putting ECU ahead, 2-0. Trevor Lawhorn crossed home when Darryl Lawhorn reached on a fielder's choice giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. Norwood followed with his sixth home run of the season making it, 5-0. Witter's first hit of the season towered over the right field wall extending ECU's lead, 6-0.
Charlotte pulled within, 6-2, in the bottom of the first on three Pirate errors all leading to two unearned runs.
Randall Poplin's three-run double in the bottom of the third closed the deficit for the 49ers, 6-5.
Adam Willard's two-run home run erased the six-run deficit and put Charlotte ahead, 7-6, in the bottom of the fourth.
ECU finishes it road swing when the Pirates travel to Duke Wednesday at 7 p.m.
