East Carolina managed to record just a pair of wins on the week defeating Elon 7-0 at home during midweek action before taking the series finale from No. 21 Rice, 7-3. The Pirates' three losses were by a combined five runs falling to instate rival N.C. State 4-2 and dropping the first two games of a three-game Conference USA series to the Owls 2-1 and 5-3 in 10 innings.
The Pirates have another big week ahead of them as they travel to instate rival and sixth-ranked North Carolina for a midweek game (6 p.m. EST) and then welcome in UCF for a three-game league series starting Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. (EST).

John Wooten, Sophomore, 1B
Wooten led the Pirates in runs (4), hits (5) and walks (3) on the week, while ranking second in average (.313) and RBI (3) ... He collected a hit in 4 of 5 games including a 2-for-4 performance in the series finale win against No. 21 Rice ... Against the Owls on Sunday, he drove in a team-best two runs, scored a couple runs and recorded his 30th career multi-hit game ... During midweek action he collected a hit and walked against instate rival N.C. State and posted another base hit and scored a run against Elon ... In the C-USA opener with Rice, he was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and he followed that with a 1-for-3 performance where he scored and knocked in a run ... He scored the winning run against the Owls in the fourth inning on Sunday and in his first at-bat of the afternoon laced a bases loaded single scoring a pair ... On the season he is batting .278 (35-for-126) with 10 doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and 21 runs.
Kevin Brandt, Junior, LHP
Brandt picked up both of ECU's wins on the week posting a 2-0 record on the bump including tossing his second career complete game, which was against No. 21 Rice in ECU's 7-3 victory ... During the week he worked 12.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and six punch outs, sported a 1.50 ERA and held opponents to a composite .170 average ... Brandt scattered seven hits in his complete game allowing three runs (two earned) and struck out six Owls to improve to 4-0 on the year ... He retired 14 of the final 16 batters faced surrendering a single in the sixth and a leadoff home run to Shane Hoelscher in the ninth ... The southpaw from Fuquay Varina, N.C. recorded multiple punch outs in the first, third and eight frames and gave up just two extra base hits, including a double to Geoff Perrott in the third frame ... Against Elon he tossed three innings of shutout relief issuing one walk and striking out one picking up the win for his eighth career victory in relief ... On the season, Brandt is 4-0 with a 1.02 ERA ... He has allowed 11 runs (five earned) on 27 hits and has recorded 35 punch outs to 10 walks in 44.0 innings ... Combined on a team-best three shutouts, which includes ECU's 7-0 win last week against Elon ... Opposing teams are hitting a composite .180 against him.
During ECU's five-game week, the starting pitching was impressive allowing just nine runs (eight earned) in 32.1 innings of work ... The five hurlers combined to strike out 28, walk eight, posted a 2.23 ERA and had three quality starts (6.0 IP or more and 3 or less ERs) ... Zach Woods made his sixth start of the year against instate rival N.C. State, where he surrendered one run on six hits with seven punch outs in 5.1 innings ... True freshman Austin Chrismon tossed four shutout innings against Elon in his second start of the year where he walked three, struck out one and allowed three base knocks ... Seth Maness suffered his second-straight loss in C-USA action against No. 21 Rice ... The senior allowed two runs (both earned) on 10 hits (all singles) with eight strikeouts and fell to 4-3 on the season and 20-5 all-time in league action ... Mike Wright went 7.1 innings (career-best) where he gave up three runs (all earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk ... Brandt tossed his second career complete game (Memphis/2010) with his dominating performance against Rice ... All three weekend starters rank among the league leaders in ERA (Brandt/1.02/1st; Maness/2.10/5th; Wright/2.61/8th), while Brant has the lowest opponent batting average (.180), Maness leads in innings pitch (60.0 IP) and is third in strikeouts (55).
Senior RHP Brad Mincey appeared in two games out of the bullpen this week tossing a pair of scoreless innings against Rice with four strikeouts, one walk and allowing two hits ... On the season Mincey owns a 4-1 record, sports a 0.58 ERA (team second-best) in 16 games ... He has allowed six runs (two earned) on 26 hits and has fanned 24 while walking just eight in 31.0 innings ... In 15 games out of the bullpen, Mincey has 0.33 ERA and has not allowed an earned run in 25.0 consecutive innings (one in 27.1 innings).
Jake Harris and Joseph Hughes each had scoreless innings of relief on the week ... Harris, who has appeared in 14 games and boasts a 1.15 ERA, tossed a scoreless inning against Rice where he issued two walks and struck out one ... Hughes, struck out five of six batters faced in perfect two innings of work against Elon during midweek action tying his career-high in punch outs ... Hughes has made seven appearances out of the bullpen posting a 1.80 ERA in 10.0 innings.
Seth Simmons, who became the school's all-time saves leader (24) back on March 19, appeared in three games working 4.0 innings where he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with five walks and four punch outs ... He suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) on Saturday and had his scoreless streak snapped at 16.1 innings ... On the season he owns a team-best 0.50 ERA in 16 appearances where he has allowed just two runs on nine hits with 26 strikeouts ... Opposing hitters are batting .153 against him.
A trio of Pirates hit home runs on the week to push the team total to 17 ... Corey Thompson smacked his first of the season against instate rival N.C. State sending a two-run shot straight away center field ... On the week he drove in four runs and scored three times ... Outfielders Ben Fultz and Trent Whitehead belted their second home runs of the year against Elon during the Pirates three-run seventh ... Fultz led off the frame with a solo shot to right field and two batters later Whitehead deposited one over the wall in right center ... Both Fultz and Whitehead collected five base hits on the week sharing the team lead with Wooten, Jack Reinheimer and Zach Wright ... Fultz currently leads ECU with a .313 (26-for-83) average in 28 games ... Reinheimer ranks second on the squad hitting at a .302 (29-for-96) clip with three doubles, 13 RBI (four game-winning) and 15 runs scored ... Wright is third in batting (.301/34-for-113) and leads the club in home runs (9), RBI (24) and runs (25).
Head Coach Billy Godwin recorded his 478th career win and 215th Pirate win against Rice on Sunday, April 11 ... Currently he ranks second all-time in the win column at ECU trailing on Gary Overton (427).
