East Carolina managed to salvage game three of the Conference USA series against No. 15 Southern Miss over the weekend, 7-6. In arguably their most difficult week of the season, the Pirates hosted four games against nationally-ranked teams going 1-3. Seth Maness (6-3, 1.93 ERA) picked up the lone win in his return back to the mound tossing four scoreless innings Sunday afternoon, while John Wooten led the club with a .467 (7-for-15) average.

The Pirates will take the week off to complete end of the semester exams before returning to the diamond Friday, May 6 when they travel to Charleston, WVa. to take on Marshall in the first of three league games at Appalachian Power Park.

Pirate Hitter-of-the-Week
John Wooten, Sophomore, INF

Wooten batted a team-best .467 (7-for-15) which included a pair of multi-hit games against No. 15 Southern Miss ... He reached base safely in all four games on the week ... Drive in three runs in Sunday's win after going 3-for-4 at the dish ... He had an RBI single up the middle in the third that scored Trent Whitehead and followed that with a two-RBI single to right in the fourth during ECU's five-run frame ... He has hit safely in five of his last six games with five RBI ... Currently he is tied for the team lead with 50 hits and is batting .287 (50-for-174) with 22 RBI, 12 doubles, two triples and has scored 26 runs.

Brad Mincey, Senior, RHP

Mincey tossed 5.0 innings of relief allowing one run (earned) on four hits in three games last week ... Against No. 14 UNC, he allowed a hit in 2.1 innings and followed that up with another 2.1 innings against No. 15 Southern Miss where he allowed a run on three base knocks ... In the series finale against the Golden Eagles, Mincey was called on to get the final out of the game where he entered with the bases loaded and the tying run on third ... He forced Ashley Graeter to fly out to left field ending the game and recording he first save of the season ... On the year he leads the team and C-USA with a 0.94 ERA, which also ranks fourth nationally ... Mincey owns a 4-2 record in 23 appearances (one start) ... He has 34 strikeouts to just nine walks in 48.0 innings and has allowed 13 runs (five earned) on 45 hits.

During ECU's four-game week, the starting pitching allowed 10 runs (seven earned) in 18.2 innings of work recording one quality start (6.0 IP or more and 3 or less ERs) ... Sophomore Joseph Hughes made his first start of the season against No. 14 North Carolina working 3.2 innings where he allowed three runs (two one earned) on two hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout in a no-decision ... Hughes also tossed a scoreless inning of relief against the Golden Eagles recording a strikeout ... Over the weekend junior Mike Wright continued his solid pitching allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6.2 innings against No. 15 Southern Miss ... He struck out six batters for the eighth time in 11 starts and allowed just one walk ... In his 11 starts, Wright has seven quality starts and has worked into the sixth innings six times ... He owns 4-3 record with a 2.69 ERA, 52 strikeouts and has allowed 27 runs (21 earned) on 55 hits in 70.1 innings ... Kevin Brandt appeared in two games on the week working 6.1 innings where he allowed five runs (all earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts ... He appeared in his seventh game out of the bullpen against No. 14 UNC working 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with two punch outs ... Brandt suffered his second-straight loss in league play against No. 15 Southern Miss lasting 4.1 innings ... On the season he is 5-2 with a 2.19 ERA in 14 games (seven starts) ... He has allowed 23 runs (16 earned) on 52 hits and has struck out 45 in 65.2 innings ... Seth Maness returned to the hill after missing his regular scheduled weekend start at Houston a week ago with an injury ... The senior right-hander worked four scoreless innings allowing four hits with two strikeouts ... He recorded his 34th career win which is one shy of tying the all-time score record ... Maness is also tied for the NCAA active lead with 34 career wins and ranks fifth in strikeouts with 313 ... Senior Zach Woods appeared in his first game since April 12 tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief against Southern Miss allowing three hits, walking one and striking out one ... In 29.1 innings this season he has 29 punch outs to 10 walks, has combined on two shutouts and owns a 1-2 record with a 3.38 ERA ... Freshman Austin Chrismon tossed a perfect inning of relief over the weekend ... In six games he boasts an impressive 1.26 ERA with a 1-0 record in 14.1 innings of work ... Chrismon has allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits with seven strikeouts.

Offensively the Pirates averaged 8.25 hits in each of their four games and had double-digit hits in two of the three games over the weekend ... Three of ECU's 33 base hits went for extra-bases including Zach Wright's three-run home run against No. 14 North Carolina, his team leading 10th of the season ... He finished the week batting .200 (3-for-15) with a club-best four RBI ... Corey Thompson returned the lineup after missing two games due to illness and batted .375 (3-for-8) with a pair of RBIs, that came in ECU's lone win of the week on Sunday ... Currently he is batting .301 (third-best) with three home runs, seven doubles and a team second-best 30 RBI ... Despite batting .182 (2-for-11) on the week, Trent Whitehead returned to the leadoff spot in the order and drew a team-best seven walks on the week ... Redshirt sophomore Philip Clark extended his hit streak to a career-best 10 games after his 1-for-4 performance in the series opener against Southern Miss before seeing it coming to an end on Saturday (0-for-3) ... He batted .308 (4-for-13) on the week scoring one run ... Junior Mike Ussery also batted .308 (4-for-13) where he drove in a pair of runs in ECU's lone win of the week on Sunday ... In 32 games (19 starts) he is batting .277 with three doubles, 10 RBI and six runs scored ... True freshman Jack Reinheimer leads the team with a .320 (47-for-147) average where he has three doubles, 17 RBI and 24 runs scored.

Head Coach Billy Godwin recorded his 483rd career win and 221st Pirate win against Southern Miss on Sunday, May 1 ... Currently he ranks second all-time in the win column at ECU trailing only Gary Overton (427).

Eight pitchers with at least 14.0 innings of work have an ERA of 2.69 or lower with four having a sub-1.93 ERA ... On a national scale, the Pirates are tied for eighth in ERA (2.45) and are ninth in opposing batting average (.229) ... They have allowed 108 earned runs (11th fewest) ...
