THINGS TO KNOW
With finals behind them, the Pirates will look to get back to their winning ways with a three-game home series against Marshall ... ECU limps into this weekend's series having lost 8 of its last 13 games, including two-straight Conference USA series ... Four of those eight setbacks have been by two or less runs and three have come at the hands of No. 7 Rice (twice) and No. 10 North Carolina (once) - all on the road.
Junior Jharel Cotton (8-0) picked up his Conference USA-leading eighth win on Sunday, striking out a career-high 12 batters ... Of his 12 punch outs, 10 were swinging and he fanned at least one batter in all seven frames worked and at least two in 5 of 7 innings ... He struck out 8 of the 9 Green Wave starters ... His eight victories are tied for fifth nationally ... Cotton has 55 strikeouts and just 14 walks on the season ... Sophomore RHP Drew Reynolds notched his team and C-USA leading ninth save of the season on Sunday ... He currently is tied for the team lead with a .333 batting average, while ranking third in hits (50) ... Junior Andy Smithmyer continued his solid pitching out of the bullpen in the series opener, throwing three scoreless innings with seven strikeouts ... On the season, he has a 1.37 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 12 walks in 39.1 innings pitched ... Senior Zach Wright hit a home run in Sunday's victory, the 34th of his career, which moved him into a tie for 10th place, alongside Brandon Henderson (2006-09), on the program's all time home run list ... Senior Tim Younger, who shares the team lead with a .333 average, has reached base safely in 23 consecutive games, which included hitting safely in his last six contests.
For the first time this season ECU fell out of the national rankings following its 1-3 week ... The Pirates are receiving votes this week by Perfect Game and
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.
In the latest RPI reports (May 3), the Pirates have the third-best RPI in Conference USA ranking 22nd by WarrenNolan.com and BoydsWorld.com ... In the NCAA's most recent RPI report that was released on May 1, the Pirates came in at No. 23.
