East Carolina recorded its third non-conference series sweep over the weekend and posted a perfect 4-0 week improving its record to 34-17. The Pirates pitching staff tossed a pair of shutouts and allowed just two runs in four games sporting a 0.50 ERA.

During midweek play, ECU blanked Atlantic Coast Conference member Wake Forest, 9-0, behind a superb pitching performance by Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week Zach Woods. ECU followed its win over the Demon Deacons with a 24-0 shutout (eighth of the year) against Delaware State before recording two more wins 7-1 and 6-1 to extend its current win streak to five games.

The Pirates will wrap up the regular season this week playing four games in five days. First up is the home finale against former Colonial Athletic Association for Old Dominion on Tuesday, May 17 before heading to Tulane for the final Conference USA series of the year (May 19-21).

Whitehead batted an impressive .611 (11-for-18) during the Pirates perfect 4-0 week ... The senior outfielder recorded multiple hits in all four contests, which included a trio of 3-hit games ... Whitehead ranked second on the team with five runs scored, laced a pair of doubles and drove in four on the week ... Against Wake Forest, he was 3-for-4 with RBI single in the fifth and a walk ... He followed that up with his second 3-hit performance of the week in the series opener against Delaware state going 3-for-5 (2 singles, double) with two RBI and three runs scored ... On Saturday he was 2-for-5 with a stolen base and closed out the series with a 3-for-4 outing (2 singles, double) with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base ... In the field he recorded seven putouts and has yet to make an error in 109 chances ... On the season, he is batting .325 (66-for-203) which ranks second on the team ... His 66 base knocks and 17 doubles is a team-best, while his four home runs is tied for second ...Whitehead has swiped 12 of 17 base attempts and has raised his average 70 points since April 15, which includes 10 multi-hit games.

Woods set the tone for the Pirates impressive week on the mound tossing six shutout innings against ACC member Wake Forest on Tuesday, May 11 in a 9-0 victory, then ECU's seventh shutout of the season ... The senior right-hander scattered four hits, walked two and struck out four (all swinging) en route to his second win of the year ... Woods owns a 2-2 record on the season in 12 appearances (8 starts) ... He has fanned 34, walked 12 and has allowed 15 runs (12 earned) on 37 hits in 36.2 innings for a 2.95 ERA.

PIRATE NOTES:
During ECU's four-game week series at Marshall, the starting pitching allowed one run (earned) in 22.0 innings of work posting a 4-0 record with 17 strikeouts to just three walks ... Mike Wright tossed five shutout innings allowing three this with six strikeouts in the series opener against Delaware State ... In his 13 starts, Wright has seven quality starts and has worked into the sixth inning six times ... Hw owns a 5-3 record with a 3.06 ERA, 63 strikeouts and has allowed 33 runs (27 earned) on 67 hits in 79.1 innings ... Kevin Brandt snapped his three-game skid on Sunday also throwing five innings of shutout ball ... The left-hander allowed two hits, walked on and fanned four picking up his sixth win ... On the season he is 6-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 16 games (nine starts) ... He has allowed 27 runs (20 earned) on 62 hits and has struck out 55 in 76.1 innings ... Senior Seth Maness recorded his 35th career win on Senior Day moving into a tie for first place on the school's all-time wins list (Winfred Johnson/1983-86) ... He allowed one run (earned) on five hits in six innings and fanned three to take over sole possession of second place on ECU's all-time strikeouts list with 320 (Larry Crayton/330 from 1959-61) ... Currently Maness is the NCAA career active leader in wins and ranks sixth in strikeouts ... Fellow classmate Brad Mincey continued his dominance on the mound last week tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and lowered his nation leading ERA to 0.85 ... Against Wake Forest he worked a perfect inning with one strikeout and followed that with a three strikeout performance against Delaware State on Saturday in 1.2 innings, where he allowed one hit ... In 26 appearances (one start) he has allowed 13 runs (five earned) on 49 hits with 39 strikeouts and 10 walks in 52.2 innings ... He owns a 5-2 record and recorded his lone save of the season against No. 15 Southern Miss on May 1 ... Seth Simmons and Shawn Armstrong each recorded five punch outs in two appearances on the week ... Simmons, who allowed one hit in 2.0 innings, has five saves in 23 appearances and owns a 5-2 record with 43 strikeouts in 26.1 innings with a 2.39 ERA ... Armstrong allowed three hits in 2.2 innings and lowered his ERA to 3.79 on the season ... The redshirt sophomore has pitched in 15 games (five starts) posting 42 strikeouts in 35.2 innings ... Redshirt freshman Tanner Merritt had his best outing in his young collegiate career tossing three perfect innings of relief with one strikeout against Delaware State.

A break from C-USA action helped the Pirates offense re-focus on hitting a boy did it pay off ... ECU averaged 16.3 hits and 11.5 runs during its perfect 4-0 week and batted an impressive .411 (65-for-148) ... Seven of ECU's nine starters in the lineup batted over .400 with Whitehead leading the way hitting at a .611 clip ... Philip Clark and Chase McDonald each had eight hits and scored at least three runs ... Clark, who batted .421 (8-for-19), had three multi-hit games including going 4-for-7 in the series opener against the Hornets ... The Pirates table setter showed some thump in his bat belting his third homer of the season Saturday with a two-run shot down the right field line ... McDonald batted a team second-best .444 (8-for-18) with a double, home run and three runs scored ... In the series finale against Delaware State the freshman recorded a career-best five RBIs and in the first inning smacked his third home run of the year sending a shot to left field staking the Pirates to an early 3-0 lead ... Catcher Zach Wright batted .438 (7-for-16) on the week leading the team with three doubles and a six runs ... He blasted his 12th home run of the season and 29th of his career in ECU's 24-0 shutout win on Friday night ... Jack Reinheimer continued his solid play both offensively and defensively ... The true freshman batted .429 (6-for-14) with a double, two RBIs and four runs scored ... In the field he recorded five putouts and 10 assists, while turning five double plays ... Currently he ranks third on the team with a .316 average and fourth with 30 runs scored ... Corey Thompson (.417) and John Wooten (.400) each had productive weeks as well ... Thompson saw his 15-game hit streak come to an end on Sunday after an 0-for-1 performance at the plate with three walks ... During his hit streak, Thompson batted .381 (24-for-63) with 13 RBIs, 12 runs and five multi-hit games ... Wooten's average has jumped 30 points since April 8 and sits at .290 (58-for-200) ... The sophomore first baseman, who has started all 51 games, ranks second on the squad with 14 doubles while ranking third with 33 runs scored and fourth with 25 RBI ... ECU's top utility player, Austin Homan, hit his first homer of the season and second of his career when he pinch hit for Wright in the fifth inning Friday night blasting a three-run shot to right field ... He would finish the game behind the dish marking the first time in his career he has caught a game at ECU.

Head Coach Billy Godwin recorded his 490th career win and 227th Pirate win against Delaware State on Sunday, May 15 ... Currently he ranks second all-time in the win column at ECU trailing only Gary Overton (427).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Nine pitchers with at least 15.0 innings of work have an ERA of 3.06 or lower with three having a sub-1.62 ERA ... On a national scale, the Pirates are sixth in ERA (2.51) and are 11th in opposing batting average (.234) ... They have allowed 128 earned runs (ninth fewest) ... ECU owns an 12-6 record in one-run games and 13 of its 17 losses have been run two runs or less ... In 33 home games the Pirates are averaging 2,936 fans per contest which ranks 22nd in average attendance ... They also rank 17th nationally in overall attendance (96,898) ... Last week (May 10) ECU was 30 in the NCAA RPI rankings ... Currently they are ranked 31st by Warren Nolan and 32nd Boyd's World ... The Pirates starter's own a 2.82 ERA, while the bullpen boasts a 1.99 ERA allowing 56 runs (38 earned) in 171.2 innings ...
