Lawhorn Repeats as All-Conference USA Selection
05/20/2003 NEW ORLEANS -- East Carolina University sophomore infielder Darryl Lawhorn has been
named to All-Conference USA for the second straight year, as announced by the
league office on Tuesday prior to the 2003 C-USA Baseball Tournament.
Lawhorn is a second team selection. The Pirates also placed two players on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Third baseman Mark Minicozzi and catcher Jake Smith both were honored, marking the first year that ECU has had two representatives on that squad. Lawhorn leads the Pirates this season with a .325 batting average and 46 runs scored. He has hit 13 home runs and had 42 RBI while playing primarily at shortstop and in the outfield. He was also named All C-USA as a freshman, earning first team honors last season. Minicozzi, a redshirt freshman, has batted .263 with seven home runs and 31 RBI as ECU's everyday third baseman. Smith, a true freshman, has played in 39 of ECU's 55 games to date and hit .298 with nine home runs and 25 RBI. The Pirates begin defense of their 2002 Conference USA Tournament crown when they take on Houston at 10 a.m. ET in a first-round matchup. 2003 CONFERENCE USA BASEBALL AWARDS
