ECU Announces Baseball Recruiting Class
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Five high school student-athletes and two transfer student-athletes have joined the East Carolina baseball team for the 2003 campaign announced Pirate head coach Randy Mazey on Wednesday.
"This is a talented class that will add depth to our core group of returning players," said Mazey. "They will make us better on the infield, outfield and behind the plate."
The Pirates' recruiting class of 2003 includes six position players and one pitcher. Unlike years past, this year's recruiting class is comprised of more out-of-state recruits than North Carolina recruits, 4-3.
Outfielder Nathan Logan, son of ECU Head Football Coach Steve Logan, is the lone new addition to the roster from Greenville. Trevor Lawhorn, twin brother of Pirate first baseman Darryl Lawhorn, joined the squad after transferring from Barton College. Jake Smith, a catcher from Southern Guilford High School in Greensboro, is the third newcomer from North Carolina.
The only Division I transfer to join the team this season is Jon Henry Kail. Kail spent two years as a reserve outfielder at Georgia Tech, where he batted .296 with three home runs. He didn't participate in competition last season due to a broken foot.Other newcomers to the team include: Mike DeJesus - 5,9, SS, L/R - Four-year letterman at Manalapan High School in Manaplan, N.J. ... earned team MVP honors as a senior by hitting .320 with five home runs ... batted a career-best .522 as a sophomore. Mike Grace - 6'1, C, R/R - Four-year letterman at Durant High School in Plantcity, Fla. ... led team to a four-year record of 88-17 and three district championships ... holds school record for home runs (14) and being hit by pitch (32) ... batted .320 with seven home runs as a senior .. graduated with high honors posting a 4.2 grade point average. John Henry Kail - 6'2, OF, R/R - Two-year letterman at Georgia Tech ... two-time all-state performer at Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh ... sixth round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 1999 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Trevor Lawhorn - 6'2, OF, R/R - Named 2002 Freshman of the Year in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference, second team all-conference and team MVP ... three-year letterman at New Hanover High School in Wilmington ... earned all-state honors as a senior. Nathan Logan - 5'10, OF, L/L - Two-year letterman at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville ... two-time All-Big East Conference selection ... batted .420, while compiling a 5-0 record as a pitcher during his senior season. Jason Neitz - 6'0, P, L/L- Four-year letterman at Mufflinburg High School in Mufflinburg, Penn. ... two-time first team all-conference selection ... led team to back-to-back district championships in 2001 and '02 ... tossed a complete-game no-hitter in the first round of the 2002 district playoffs ... batted .433 with compiling a 3.39 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 72.1 innings pitched. Jake Smith - 6'1, C, R/R - Two-time all-state selection at Southern Guilford High School in Greensboro ... batted .455 with 13 home runs, while striking out just five times as a senior ... 2002 conference Player of the Year ... three-time all-conference member ... four-year letterman.
