GREENVILLE, N.C. - With the Purple-Gold Series already in hand, East Carolina (2-0-1) rallied from two runs down in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the Pirates (0-2-1) at seven in Game 3 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium closing out the 2009 fall season.
On the mound, the Pirates used three pitchers in Joseph Hughes (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 Ks), Michael Wright (2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, K) and Seth Maness (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 4 Ks), while East Carolina countered with four hurlers in Shawn Armstrong (3.0 IP, 2 BB), Lance Honeycutt (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BBs, 2 Ks), Brad Mincey (2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BBs, 2 Ks) and Seth Simmons (1.0 IP, BB, K).
East Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Harris roped a double to right-center with two outs scoring Bryan Bass from second. Bass led off with a walk then stole second to get into scoring position.
Back-to-back RBI infield singles by Bass and Dustin Harrington extended East Carolina's lead to 3-0 in the second. After Hughes plunked Z. Wright and Warzon in consecutive at-bats, Billy Walling moved the runners up 90-feet on a sac bunt before Bass pushed across Wright and Harrington drove in Warzon.
Harrington drove in East Carolina's fourth run of the game pushing the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when he grounded into a double play scoring Walling, who led off with a double down the left field line.
Warzon, who was traded in the middle of the game to the Pirates, took a first pitch offering from Honeycutt over the left field wall drawing the score to 4-3 in the fifth. Homan broke up East Carolina's no-hit bid with a leadoff single to right then moved to second on Philip Clark's walk before Warzon's blast.
Z. Wright's triple to center field put East Carolina up 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Thompson stroked a one-out single to right then touched home on Z. Wright's first base knock of the contest, a triple to center field.
Homan's two-out two-RBI single to left knotted the game at five in the top of the seventh. Warzon led off with a single to left then landed on third thanks to consecutive walks by Jacob Davis and Luke Harmer, which loaded the bases for Homan.
The Pirates took a 7-5 lead in the eighth when Davis reached on a throwing error by Thompson scoring Cam Freeman and Warzon, who both singled off Mincey to start the inning.
East Carolina tied the game at seven in the eighth on three Pirate errors, all by Homan who lost the ball in the sun at first base. Walling was the first to reach on an error before being forced out at second on Bass' at-bat. Harrington ended up on second on another error and scored on Harris' single up the middle, pulling East Carolina within one, 7-6. After Thompson landed on second due to the third error of the frame, Z. Wright pushed across the tying run on a single to left.
