GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Jeff Hoffman tossed three scoreless innings and junior Drew Reynolds picked up the save as the Purple team defeated Gold 5-2 in the deciding game of the 2012 Purple-Gold World Series at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Purple struck for three runs and never relinquished the lead. Junior Jack Reinheimer started the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice bunt by Reynolds, where Gold pitcher David Lucroy miss fired with a throw to second trying to turn a double play. Sophomore Nick Thompson plated the first run of the frame with a double to right center scoring Reinheimer and knotting the game at one.
After junior Ben Fultz walked to load the bases, Lucroy got senior Chris Gosik to pop out to second base before freshman Luke Lowery drove a ball to right field scoring Reynolds. Freshman Joe Brooks laced a comebacker to the mound, where Lucroy had trouble corralling the ball plating Thompson to cap the scoring at three for Purple.
Hoffman was dominant in his three-inning stint striking out two and allowing just one hit in a 23-pitch performance. Sophomore Dylan Dickens (1-0) got the win in relief after surrendering a pair of runs (one earned) on four hits in three innings of work. Reynolds got his lone save of the series allowing two hits in a scoreless seventh.
Lucroy (0-1) suffered the loss allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Through his first three stanzas, Lucroy retired 9-of-11 batters faced giving up a single to Reinheimer in the first and issuing a walk to Gosik in the second before the Purple scored three runs in the fourth. Sophomore Tyler Bolton was touched for two runs (both earned) on one hit in his relief stint (1.1 innings), while senior Joseph Hughes worked a scoreless sixth surrendering a walk and punching out one.
Gold jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the fourth thanks to an RBI single by junior Zach Houchins. With two outs in the frame, senior Sam King laced a double down the left field line and came around to score easily on Houchins' base hit to right center.
Purple added to its lead in the fifth on a pair of sac flies by Thompson and Fultz that plated senior Philip Clark and Reinheimer for a 5-1 advantage.
Houchins delivered again for Gold in the sixth with a RBI single up the middle that scored senior Jay Cannon for the games final run and pulling Gold within three, 5-2.
Gold out hit Purple 7-4 on the afternoon with both Houchins and King recording a pair of base knocks. Houchins drove in a team-best two runs for Gold, while Thompson had a pair of RBI for Purple.
The Pirates will now turn to their attention to the individual work out phase of the fall season for the next five weeks before concluding with the annual Fire of Blackbeard Challenge, which is scheduled to run from Nov. 25-28. ECU will open the 2013 season at home on Friday, Feb. 15 against Virginia with a first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. (EST).
