Diamond Bucs Raise $15,057 For Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund
Nov. 2, 2005
GREENVILLE, N.C. - After nearly a month of counting donations from their 100-inning extravaganza, the East Carolina baseball team officially announced it raised $15,057 for the Conference USA Relief Fund. The Pirates held a 100-inning baseball game on Oct. 9, 2005 to help those victimized by Hurricane Katrina. Each Pirate batter stepped up to the plate getting one pitch to hit and put the ball in play. Four hours later the "Gold" team, led by senior catcher Jake Smith, defeated the "Purple" 102-63. On the day there were 277 total hits and 26 homeruns, 12 of which came from Pirate pitchers. To date, ECU student-athletes have raised and/or donated $17,557 for the C-USA Relief Fund and American Red Cross Fund to help aid Hurricane Katrina victims.
