GREENVILLE, N.C. - Luke Lowery recorded a pair of hits including a home run, while Ian Townsend added three hits leading Purple (1-0) to an 8-4 win over Gold (0-1) Thursday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Trailing 4-1 after three complete innings, Purple scored seven runs over the final four frames to take a 1-0 lead in the Pirates' annual Purple-Gold World Series. Dylan Brown broke a four-all tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out single to left pushing across Davis Kirkpatrick for a 5-4 advantage. After left-hander Nick Durazo struck out Travis Watkins and Cameron Snow looking to start the inning, Kirkpatrick delivered a single to left and moved into scoring position when Charlie Yorgen was hit by a pitch, setting up the game-winning hit.
Brett Mabry (1-0) picked up the win relief scattering one hit over 4.1 innings of work with five strikeouts. Starter Reid Love allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with two punch-outs in 2.1 innings, while Jacob Wolfe (1.1 IP) and Ryan Williams (1.0 IP) tossed a perfect 2.1 frames to secure the win.
Durazo (0-1) suffered the loss surrendering three runs (all earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings. David Lucroy gave up three runs (all earned) on a pair of hits in four full innings, while Brandon Taylor was touched for a couple of runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
Purple jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by Andrew LaMura to left field that plated Love from third. Love got things going when he was hit by a pitch with one out, then moved to second on Townsend's single before landing on third when Lowery was plunked to load the bases for LaMura.
Gold responded with a four-run third thanks to RBI from Drew Reynolds, Zach Houchins and Jonathan Holt taking a 4-1 advantage. Bryce Harman singled down the left field line to start the frame, which was followed by back-to-back bunt singles by Kirk Morgan and Garrett Brooks. Joshua Lovick reached on a throwing error scoring Harman for Gold's first run.
The marry-go-round kept turning when Reynolds singled up the middle plating Morgan. Houchins kept the frame going with a bases loaded walk scoring Brooks and Holt's sac fly to right with two outs capped the frame.
Purple used a pair of walks and three hits to knot the contest at four-all in the fifth. Kirkpatrick and Yorgen walked to start the inning and Brown moved both runners into scoring position on a sac bunt. Love and Townsend followed with RBI singles before Lowery doubled off the wall in left field.
Lowery blasted a solo shot to left center and Snow singled to left field scoring LaMura extending Purple's lead to 7-4.
Brown tacked on the final run of the night for Purple with a single to right that pushed across Yorgen.
Eight of the Purple's starting nine posted at least one hit, while the top-five in the batting order recording nine of its 12 total base knocks. Brown (two), Lowery (two) and Townsend (three) collected multiple hits for Purple, while Brooks was the lone Gold player two base hits.
Game two of the three-game series will take place Friday, Nov. 8 with RHP Jeff Hoffman looking to secure the series win for Coach Austin Morgan and the Purple squad. The Gold team will look to stay alive with RHP Tyler Bolton toeing the rubber for Coach Ryan Wood. First pitch is slated for 5:15 p.m. (EST).
