GREENVILLE, N.C. - The freshmen tandem of Bryce Harman and Kirk Morgan combined for four hits and drove in five runs helping Gold post an 8-3 series clinching win over Purple in game three of the Purple-Gold World Series Sunday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Gold (2-1) struck for three early runs in the top of the second thanks to a pair of errors. Zach Houchins reached second to start the frame due to the first of two errors by Purple (1-2) third baseman Charlie Yorgen. Ben Fultz followed with a walk before Jonathan Holt reached on the second error that plated Houchins for the games first run. Harman drove Fultz in from third on a comebacker to Davis Kirkpatrick on the mound and two batters later Morgan singled down the left field line plating Holt.
Hayden White (1-0) picked up the win allowing a pair of runs on three hits with a strikeout in four innings of work. His only miscue was surrendering a two-run shot to Ian Townsend in the bottom of the third. James Gray was touched for a run in two innings of work, while Nick Durazo (1.2 IP), Luke Bolka (0.1 IP) and Drew Reynolds (1.0 IP) scattered one hit over the final three innings.
Kirkpatrick (0-1) took the loss after giving up six runs (one earned) on two hits with four walks and a punch out in three full frames. Brandon Saunders (1.0 IP), Evan Kruczynski (2.0 IP) and Ryan Williams (1.0 IP) tossed shutout relief innings, while Jacob Wolfe allowed a pair of runs (both earned) on three hits.
Gold added three runs in the top of the third pushing its lead to 6-0. With two outs, Fultz and Holt drew consecutive walks before Harman singled to center scoring Fultz. Eric Tyler followed by reaching on the third Purple error of the afternoon, which allowed Holt to cross home. Later in the frame Tyler attempted to steal second, but a wild throw by Travis Watkins sailed into center field plating Harman.
Purple finally got on the board thanks to Townsend's two run homer in the bottom half of the third. Reid Love singled through the right side with one out and trotted home on Townsend's blast to right field.
Kirkpatrick pulled Purple within three, 6-3, with his sac fly in the sixth. Watkins reached on a fielder's choice and took third on Yorgen's double down the left field line. Kirkpatrick took a 1-1 count to left field easily scoring Watkins.
Gold added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth capping the scoring at 8-3. Holt and Harman laced back-to-back single and with one out, Morgan drove a Wolfe fastball right back up the middle clearing the bases.
Harman and Morgan each collected two hits for Gold, while love was the lone Purple player with multiple hits. Fultz and Harman scored a pair of runs for Gold, while Holt touched home three times.
The Pirates will conclude the 2013 Fall Season with a week of individual work before participating in their annual Fire of Blackbeard Challenge, which is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 18.
