Love,
Lynn, Audrey and J.D. LeClair

As Keith's outfield coach his freshman year at WCU I quickly came to realize his special dedication to the game through his work habits and willingness to make himself and everyone better around him. His great leadership, success and the way teammates and friends drew to him was seen from the beginning in the way he treated people and the way he made them feel special, no matter their talents. I believe we all have learned through Keith's journey about what is really important in life with our family and the friends we meet along the way.
-Bill Currier (Head Baseball Coach at Vermont and former WCU Assistant Coach 1984-85)

May God be with you at this difficult time. Keith was an outstanding baseball coach but more importantly an incredible human being. The thoughts and prayers from the University of Pittsburgh Baseball family are with you.
-Joe Jordano (Head Baseball Coach at University of Pittsburgh)

There is not enough space or words to be able to fully describe the impact Coach LeClair had on my life and so many others. I was a player for Coach his first four years at ECU. The first day he met with the team he talked about OMAHA! Many others and myself had no idea it was possible to make it to the College World Series. One of his greatest feats was making a bunch of average players believe they could make it to OMAHA. It took some time, but he turned 35 average young men into a well oiled machine who believed they could beat anyone, anytime, any place! And we always did it the right way with hard work, discipline, and believing in one another! WE WERE A FAMILY! Coach LeClair molded me into the Coach I am today - I will miss him dearly, but I will always wear the #23 in his honor!
-Cliff Godwin (Former Player and Current LSU Assistant Baseball Coach)

Lynn, Audry, and JD, I know that you do not know me however I am most fortunate to have known Keith. Coach LeClair has touched so many people in our profession of coaching college baseball. Not because he was a great coach of the game but because he was an even greater person. His ability to do this job with such class and dignity is a tribute to his great charecter. I am very fortunate to have known your husband and father and I want you to know that his passion and love for his family along with his faith are unmatched. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.
-Mike Kennedy (Elon University Head Baseball Coach)

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Coach LeClair. I had the honor of meeting Keith at a clinic several years ago. The impression he made upon me has been everlasting.
-Mark Tucker (Surry CC Head Baseball Coach)

I met a person this year while playing the Pirates and I told him what a wonderful place the stadium was. He said you never met Coach LeClair, but he was a true hero for the pirate family. My heart and prayers go out to his family, and the East Carolina family.
-Jon Muller (University of Albany Head Baseball Coach

"Most people are defined by what they do in terms of wins, honors, accomplishments and things like that. Keith is defined by the way he lived his life. He put his family and religion first and did everything else after that the right way."
- Todd Raleigh (Western Carolina Head Baseball Coach)

Keith was like a son, brother, and best friend to me. He's a person who I learned a lot more from than he ever learned from me. He's a tremendous credit to coaching, and all those that he had a chance to touch are better off for it. Keith was a very special person who understood the balance between hard work, being physically and mentally tough, and being a great competitor. He was that way as a player and as a coach. Everyone who played with him, for him, or coached alongside him has nothing but the ultimate respect for him. Every time we played his teams, they were amongst the best coached, toughest, and most aggressive teams that we played all year long, and that was a direct reflection what he was all about. Keith certainly left the world a better place and everyone who knew him is better off for it. He touched me and so many others in countless ways. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and hope they can find strength in the fact that he was a great husband, father, and son. He will be missed by us all.
- Jack Leggett (Head Baseball Coach at Clemson)

Hello, I am Hank Beecher. I coached Keith for 4 years in HS and for legion in Walpole NH. I do hope that this note reaches you. I am saddened to hear of Keith's' passing. Keith was one of my favorite players and certainly the most hard working. He did himself and his family proud. He was a great player and coach and devoted to God and his family. I wish you all the best and I am happy in the fact that we were all able to share in the life of Keith LeClair.
- Hank Beecher (Fall Mount Baseball Coach)

All of us associated with The University of North Carolina baseball program wish to extend our condolences to the LeClair family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I was blessed to know Keith and be able to call him a friend as well as a colleague. He is now most certainly in a wonderful place.
- Mike Fox (University of North Carolina Head Baseball Coach)

May God be with all of you during your time of sorrow and always. We are praying for you.
- David and Windy Horn (Apex. N.C.)

An incredible man, both on and off the field. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.
- John Parnell

- Jim Whitaker

We are praying that you feel, now more than ever, how high, how deep, and how great is Christ's love for the LeClair family. Keith's legacy is one of perseverance and overcoming (Rev 2-4). We are thankful to have read his words over the past few years.

Another great Pirate has gone on to his final victory. My thoughts and prayers for hope and peace go out to the LeClair family. Thank you for sharing your husband and father with us. He was a remarkable man who touched the lives of many he never even met. He is a wonderful example and witness for us all. God bless you all!
- Elizabeth Vaughn

Keith was a great inspiration for those who follow college sports. In today's world, it is rare to find someone who was able to touch the lives of so many people. I had the pleasure of talking with Keith when he received the Coach of the Year Award at the Raleigh Hot Stove League in early 2002. It is a conversation that I will never forget. I hope that good memories of his life will help sustain his family during this time.
- Carl Davis

For many of us not blessed with the talent to excel in sports, we admire the stars and coaches who share their talent. But those who transcend the bounds of their gift and uniquely inform all of us that there are things more important than games are heroes to all of us, fans, players and coaches alike. For those of us from ECU, players and fans alike, you are such a hero. On 5/3/04 Coach responded eloquently, including the following: "...I LOVE TO COACH AND WIN GAMES,BUT I WOULD TRADE ALL THAT IN FOR THE CHANCE TO HUG MY KIDS ONE MORE TIME...DON'T EVER TAKE THAT LITTLE BLESSING FOR GRANTED..."
- Tom Herdelin

It is an honor to have our beloved university forever associated with Coach LeClair. God bless the LeClair family and the extended East Carolina family during this difficult time. He will be missed. (ECU '92)

My thoughts and prayers go out to Coach LeClair's wonderful family. It was blessing to play for Coach, and an experience I will always cherish. I learned a great deal from Coach about baseball, but even more about being a man.
- Brooks Jernigan (1997-99)

A level a greatness has been set in our lives by this wonderful man, one that will live for many life times. On the athletics field and most especially off, we have seen what true courage and honor looked like in Coach LeClair. May those of us who were fortunate enough to be around ECU during his time, take a piece of Coach LeClair with us everyday and pass it along to someone else. May God Bless and comfort the entire LeClair family.
- Wayne Freeman

A man is as great as the dreams he dreams, As great as the values he redeems, And the happiness he shares, A man is as great as the thoughts he thinks, and the insight he has gained, A man is as great as the truth he speaks, As great as the help he gives, As great as the destiny he seeks, As great as the life he lives.
- C.E. Flynn

The ECU family and community lost a great man today but he shall live on the hearts of many and we will all think of him every time we enter Clark LeClair Stadium. Thanks Coach.
- Len, Robin, Katy and Jackson Fuqua

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire LeClair family. All of us are better because of Keith's life and for the example of courage that he set. His memory will be forever enshrined within the Pirate Nation and those memories will inspire all of us to live up to his ideals.
- Jon and Marcia Felton

Keith LeClair was an inspiration to us all (Sports Fans or Not). Who remembers the ovation he received at the football game several years ago? I have no doubt he would still receive the same ovation today! In my mind Keith LeClair will always be an "ECU Pirate" and for that I am even more proud to wear purple and gold. My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair Family.

- The Thomas Family

"He will most be remembered for the lives he has touched. I was his teammate, his assistant coach and friend so I know first hand just how many lives he affected in a positive way. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mother to a long battle with cancer and all I can tell you is it slowly gets better. Keith was diagnosed with ALS at the same time I was diagnosed with colon Cancer. Treatment was very hard. I thought of Keith each day and how brave he was and it inspired me to toughen up. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. I know Keith is playing ball right now. May God keep you in his tender care.
- Tony Hackett

Keith LeClair renewed my love for baseball. His triumphs and challenges were something to behold, as he pushed for greatness where none thought it could be done.

Now, as my own son begins playing this grand sport, with the twinkle in his eye and the excitement and passion Keith displayed, it gives me a found memory. Of a stadium in Kinston chatting "Keith, Keith" when we beat Houston to win the CUSA title. And a hope that one day my son could be part of one of these teams.

How melancholy that today, my 7 year old went to his first baseball camp @ ECU, At the wonderful stadium in Keith's honor, when I heard Keith had passed. I can only hope and pray that Keith's spirit fills him as he play.

May God bless your family. Psalm 40.
- Greg MacDaid

Your husband and daddy touched so many people through it all - God Bless him and the angels he sits with and may God Bless each of you in your sorrow and hold you as well in the palm of His hands...I thank you for having shared him with us at East Carolina - he will be remembered always.

I thank God that there are strong Christian men in the world that can set such a good example and leave such a lasting mark on those around them. No. 23 will always hold a special place in my heart. Heaven has new coach in their ranks today.
- Dean A. Beabout (ECU '85) and family

And now he can touch the face of God. God bless you Keith
- Bill Gardner

There is no words that can ease the pain that your family is feeling today. I do hope that in the days and weeks to come that your family takes some comfort in the wonderful impact that Coach LeClair had on ECU and the community but more importantly on each and every individual who met him or knew of him. The world is a better place because he was here.
- Jeff Jones

We have been Blessed with Keith LeClair.
- David R. Howell

My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair Family.
- Jennifer Baysden

Coach LeClair was such an awesome man. He was one of the first coaches, besides my track coach, I met in the athletic program when I came for my track visit back in 2002. He told me something that will be stuck in my head forever..."Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional". I never really understood it, until now. No matter what sport you played or participated in. Coach LeClair has touched you in one way or another, even to this day. My heart goes out to the LeClair family and friends. My prayers are with you.
- Stephanie Flint

Our prayers are with you. The world needs more men like Keith LeClair and we mourn with you. My son played on Coach LeClair's 1992 Western Carolina team - Keith's first year as a Head Coach. He taught my son a lot about baseball but more important he taught my son more about life. The young men who had Keith LeClair as a role model as they grew from teenage boys to men in college were blessed with a wonderful example. Don't get me wrong he loved baseball but they also saw a man who loved his family and was liked and admired by all because of his integrity and caring attitude. Unlike some college coaches he held them to a higher standard because they were college athletes. His courageous actions throughout his illness were an inspiration. His influence will continue not only through his family but through the hundreds of young men that were lucky enough to call him "Coach".
- Linda Baker

To Lynn, Audrey, and JD and family my thoughts and prayers go out to you with passing of coach. He was a great coach, teacher, mentor, and most importantly husband and father. he will be missed greatly. Sincerely in my thoughts and prayers
- Joe Jack Sellers (ECU '95)

My prayers and thoughts are with you during this time. Hold on to the faith that has guided you thru the illness. Know that Coach is better off now and not suffering. He is in heaven coaching again.
- Tony Shanks

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family. Keith is one of the most courageous people I know. God needed another angel.
- Mike Hilton and Family (WCU player 1990-93)

May God be with you during this tough time. Today Heaven received a true champion, but most of all A great Man. Thanks for all the great memories.
- Scott Reeder

I am so sorry for your loss. No. 23 will ALWAYS remain in our hearts! God Bless you and your family!
- Courtney Bishop

Heaven has acquired a new third base coach and he wears #23. May God bless the family and comfort you during this time! You are in our thoughts and prayers.
- Art Wedemeyer

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. Coach LeClair was a thoughtful and inspirational man in every way. We loved watching HIS Pirates deliver 100% on the field all the time. He will be missed.
- William C. & Karen Shelton

God bless you all for your strength and dignity through Coach LeClair's battle with ALS. You were all role models to the community in your grace and dignity. I offer my sincerest condolences to you all in this time of grief. We all know Coach LeClair is now resting comfortably in the arms of our Lord and Savior, where there is no more suffering, sorrow, or pain. Coach LeClair set a fine example at East Carolina, and his legacy will live on for many many years to come. He was and is a true champion. I think the greatest compliment one can give a coach is most appropriate for Coach LeClair, and that is that he first and foremost coached people. Many thoughts and prayers will be with you all. God Bless.
- Doug Parrish

In your time of need may the words of others comfort you.
- Stephen Batts and family

My thoughts are with you, Lynn and family. Keith's battle has given many others hope by fighting ALS for so long, and drawing attention to the need for more research. He will live forever in his good deeds, and what you and your children pass on.
- Kip Sloan

My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to the LeClair family. Coach was a great man and had a tremendous influence on me as a player and person. He believed in me from the first time he saw me and taught me how to be a winner on and off the field. He is an inspiration and will be deeply missed.
- Brian Cavanaugh

Very few people have the ability to make a difference in so many lives. Coach LeClair has done so much on and off the field, his legacy will live forever, at East Carolina and in the hearts of all Pirates.
- Mike Conner

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with your family. Keith was such an inspiration to us all. John Allen learned so much about himself as a person from Keith. He was a wonderful mentor, friend, and coach who prepared so many young men for life after baseball at East Carolina. I tell people all the time that John is the person he is today because of Keith and the coaches he looked up to. We hope to see you soon.
- Ann and Bill Williamson

My families thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless!
- Johnnie Harrell

In this life we are given only a few people that can be called a hero in the truest sense of the word, Coach LeClair was one. In his short time here he was able to touch many lives and make those lives richer just from the contact. His life has provided a example of faith, hope and love that will shine for a long time to come.
- John Whichard

He was a great guy and a great coach. This program would not be where it is today without his touch. May God's comforting hand help his mourning family. No. 23 will always be remember as a great Pirate.
- Phi Kappa Psi

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. LeClair, but I have watched from afar the dignity he and your family have displayed. Your courage in the face of this terrible disease has been nothing short of amazing. The Lord will surely bless you for having been through this without flinching. In this time of loss I hope you can find some solace in knowing there are thousands of unknowns like myself that are better people having watched and learned how adversity should be handled.
- Ed Tew

My sincere condolences go out to the entire LeClair family, May God bless each of you and I would like to thank you and God for loaning to East Carolina, if even for a short time, an awesome coach and more importantly and awesome man. He was and always will be a True Pirate!
- Kent Smothers

I can't imagine that my words hold any weight in a time like this, so I won't even try...but I will tell you a little story.

I went out for baseball at ECU my freshman year in 1997. I was sitting in the dugout next to Coach LeClair and he looked at me and said, "Son, what is in your ears?" I responded "Well, these are ear rings, sir"..to which he responded, "Where are you from?"..and I said, "Charlotte, Providence High School, Second Base"...Coach said "I hope you enjoyed your time there, because my players don't wear ear rings. Do you want to play for East Carolina?"..."Well, yes sir, I sure do."..." Well in that case, you'd better lose the ear rings before you touch that grass today, this is East Carolina Baseball, it ain't Providence High School."

I realized then and there that Coach LeClair was a purest and he meant business. He wasn't mean, but he was direct and never broke eye contact with me. That short conversation with him left such an impression on me...not only on the baseball field, but in the classroom, in public, when out with friends, in anything that I did. It made me realize that it was time to grow up and that the things that used to fly, weren't going to fly anymore. It was time to present myself as a man...and not some punk kid.

Keith LeClair is a man-maker.

- Adam Hummell (ECU 2001)

I am very sorry for your loss. Keith was a great inspiration through his faith in God to so many people. I know this must be a very difficult time for you, but it is great to know that he is now in heaven, has no pain, full use of his body, and one day you will be reunited again. What a great gift from Jesus Christ. We will pray for your family that you might have peace.
- Steve Scott

Keith LeClair was the true definition of a champion. A great father, husband, coach, and a true man of God. He touched and inspired everyone he knew or that just knew his story. He will be greatly missed by the Pirate Nation. My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family...23!
- Kyle Barber

Keith will be deeply missed. He is the man that put ECU baseball on the map!!! He is and will always be a true PIRATE. Omaha - 1355 miles!!!
- Jeff Polaski

The thoughts and prayers of our family go out to the LeClair family. Coach LeClair is responsible to elevating the Pirate baseball program to the next level. Moreso, he was responsible for molding the lives of many young men. I hope when the Pirates finally go to Omaha, Coach LeClair enjoys the view. God Blees the LeClair family.
- Greg Edge

Keith, and all of you, have been an inspiration to me for quite some time. Your faith through all of Keith's illness has truly shown the light of Christ to the world. The Bible says it is never in vain when we do this.

It also says that your separation is but a short time compared to eternity with those we love. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with you. May God bless you with His love, comfort, and peace. - Clint Cooke

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Coach LeClair. He was such a shining light to North Carolina & outside, Greenville, East Carolina University, ECU Baseball, and most of all his family. I remember the first day we met Coach LeClair. He was on top of the world. He told us then that he was the happiest man alive. He said he had a family that he truly loved and felt loved by. He also said that he had the greatest job in the world. I think he felt like this right up until the end. We were so blessed to have known him.
- Debbie and Sidney Rhodes

JD, I am sorry for your loss, my prayers are with you and your family. No. 23 we love!

Coach LeClair touched the Pirate Nation in a manner that few people ever achieve in life. Tears of purple and gold are being shed in sadness for your loss but also in happiness for the impact that Coach LeClair has provided the ECU family. May he rest in peace.
- Corey Duber

To the LeClair family:
Thank you for sharing Coach with us and allowing us to grow in the knowledge of what is good, right, and strong. The Lord has blessed you with Keith and now He is giving him his well deserved rest. The strength that Keith displayed over these last few years and the will that you all exhibited in providing for him and loving him in the way you did gives others strength to know that the Lord has a plan. And while His plan is not always clear to us, it is the way to His Kingdom.

I pray that you soon will emerge from this rightful period of grief renewed in the Spirit of the Lord Almighty.

Rest easy, 23, you are home safe. -Tom Morrissey (ECU '79)

When ECU began recruiting our son Ryan, we knew very little about ECU in general & specifically Coach LeClair. After our recruiting visit, Ryan was convinced ECU was where he wanted to spend his college years. After my meeting with Keith, I couldn't imagine a better life coach & baseball coach for my son. Lynn, Keith's life will influence Ryan for a lifetime. For that I cannot say thank you enough. Your daily example of caring for Keith thru his illness has been an example & inspiration to the Jones'. May God's deepest compassionate care & love be with you, the children and your extended family in your hour of grief.
-Tom and Wendy Jones (Gibsonia, Pa.)

I communicated with Keith only once. I had emailed a comment on some of his writings . Even though unable to use arms or legs, he wished to honor God through written communication. Many people were inspired by what he wrote.

I am sure Keith was very proud of his and Lynne's two beautiful children. I see J.D. and Audrey regularly at church. I believe they will continue the legacy- a life lived with integrity and strength of character.
-Carol Brown

My thoughts and prayers are with you. While we grieve the loss that his absence creates on earth, we rejoice that he now can enjoy the blessing that comes with an eternal life with Jesus in heaven.

I am Danny Whitford's cousin and was blessed over the past couple of years as Danny forwarded Keith's devotional thoughts that were composed during his mighty battle with ALS. He touched the lives of many.
-Diane Walters

Your husband and father will be greatly missed. Please find comfort in knowing that he is at peace and that many thousands of friends and fans have each of you in their prayers. I look forward to the day that we achieve his dream of going to the College World Series. God bless.
-Chuck Coggins

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family. Coach was inspiration to us all.
-John, Bonnie, Tyler and Jay Mattox

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. We hope you can find some comfort from the love and support of the entire Pirate nation, and from the memories of just how special this man was to all those he touched. He truly ran a good race and fought the good fight and he is now welcomed to that special part of heaven set aside for those who so positively impact the lives of others. God bless you.
-Wes and Angie Sumner

We all have great memories of Keith LeClair and those will live on forever! He was a great man!
-Jamie and Juli Baynard

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family through this time. I know Keith was a great man and a Christian, and although God's timing is never understood, I know this morning He wanted Keith to come home. Coach LeClair will never be forgotten at ECU, for both being a great coach and a man of principles, morals, and character. He really did love his job, this school, and the game of baseball. The seeds he planted will have long lasting effects on both young baseball players and fans forever. Thank you for the example of Christian love and compassion you all have shown. We need more of that these days. God bless.
-Michael and Ashly Grubb

My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. Mr. LeClair was what we all strive to be "a good person".

-Ryan Davis

I am so sorry and love to go watch ECU baseball and Coach LeClair was a great guy and will always be remembered.
-Chandler Sutton

We would like to express to all the members of Ketih's family our heartfelt sympathy at this time. Carolyn's father, died many years ago of ALS, so whenever we hear of anyone having to endure the difficulties of this disease, it brings it very close to us. We remember Keith, as an outstanding young man, during his years here at WCU, and have kept up with him, during his tremendous coaching career. Out thoughts and prayers are certainly with you at this time.
-Johnny and Carolyn Wike (Johnny, former coach under Bob Waters)

As I write this message, I am filled with so many different emotions. I am happy that Coach's physical battle is over though he will be missed by so many. I am angered that such a good person is no longer here to teach and lead others by his inspirational example. I am sad for a wife and children who no longer have a spouse and dad to lean on for strength and guidance. I have been truly blessed to have met, emailed, and watched him touch so many lives. I am elated that he can now be at peace and is with his Lord! I knew him to be a truly spiritual man and his influence over so many young men and women will truly probably never be known, but I feel certain that his true rewards will be great and his legacy will live for a long time. I pray that he is happy and at peace, I believe that he is! You have no idea who I am, but I did truly love the man and what he stood for while we got to know him during what was much to short of a time here. I will continue to pray for all of you and wish to thank you for your tireless efforts in standing by him during his illness and everything that came with it. I have prayed for you all today, may God truly be with you and give you the needed strength to get through the rest of your days!
-Rex Moody (Duplin/Sampson Pirate Club President)

Outside of my mother, father, and brother, Coach LeClair was, and will remain the biggest influence in my life. He made me a better player, a better coach, and most importantly brought me a better Christian. While it is a sad day for all of us that are still here without him, it is a great day for Coach because he is in a place with no more pain or frustration. To Lynn, Audrey and JD, our thought and prayers are with you. I will miss you Coach.
-Jeff Sziksai

Sincere condolences and God Bless Coach LeClair and all of your Family.
-John and Jamie Grieco

Coach LeClair distinguished himself by being a class act, on the field and off. He is a true legend for both the Western Carolina and East Carolina athletic programs. -K.C. Culler (WCU '00)

I just wanted to send a note to tell you guys that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I am an East Carolina student and have heard so many things about Coach LeClair. He is in a better place now and no longer in pain. That's what has to keep you going. Now he can watch over all of you with no pain, no tears....only happiness. Keith had the faith to fight no matter what the the final version was to become and I will always admire him as a person and coach for doing so. He fought the battle and he is now in true peace and his legacy will have an impact on others for the rest of our lives. May God bless this family and may Keith rest in peace.
-Jane McKay Stamey (Waynesville, N.C.)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. I can't tell you how much Coach's Christian walk has helped me see the grace of God and how He can use one person to make a profound impact on those He places in his path. May God bless and comfort you at this time in your lives.

I only wish we would have had the opportunity to meet him and for Zach to play for him. I hope that god blesses you and your family at this troubling time and that his presence will comfort you.
-The Coopers

I was inducted into the Western Carolina Hall of Fame with Keith. This was a great honor for me and was made even more so because I was inducted with Keith LeClair. We go to church with Russell and Lori Cudd and when Lori told me the situation after church yesterday I broke down and cried. I could not help myself.

I know that God has welcomed Keith and has wrapped him in His loving arms and everything is perfect.

May God bless your family.

The number 23 hanging on the outfield wall at Western's baseball stadium will never be forgotten.
-Paul Jones

RIP Coach LeClair, your legacy will live on forever in the hearts of Pirate Nation and we will get to Omaha.
-John

I am deeply saddened to hear of Coach's passing, he was such an inspiration and a great man who touched so many lives in his 40 years of life. I pray that your wounds will heal and the memory of Coach will keep you in the most trying times. I know he was prepared to go meet our lord and savior, with that knowledge, I'm certain it eases your pain. He is now in god's presence and is suffering no longer, while being a tremendous example of humanity to everyone during the time he has been sick. No complaining, no asking "why me", just trying to spread the messages of our lord and that's why we must "tip our cap" to him and thank the lord that we were able to learn a great lesson from him.

I really feel the saddest for those two beautiful children, god bless them as they move on through their lifetime. I'm sure they can't fathom what their father stands for and hope one day they can, I'm sure the values the both of you taught them will be evident in the years to come. I know they are in great hands! I have a 7-month old son and hope I can raise him to have as much courage and be as personable as coach was. What a man, what a man!

He will be sorely missed and I am a better person today for having known him. I will be praying for you guys.

God Bless,

-Chad Triplett

From an ECU student and fan, Thank You for everything coach.
-Keith Williams

In the course of a lifetime, you might be fortunate enough to meet one or two special people. For us, Coach LeClair was that person.

His coaching skills are legendary. But baseball was only a fraction of the legacy that Coach LeClair left. Coach LeClair developed more than baseball players, he developed men with character and integrity. He taught by example. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Our son was fortunate to have been touched by this great man. We will forever be grateful for the gift of knowing Coach LeClair.

One of the good ones is gone. We are now a little less than we were.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the LeClair family.
-Mark and Mary Minicozzi

I never met Coach Le Clair. I never got to see him coach a game. I wasn't even aware of ECU when he was around. But since the day I walked on campus I could feel his influence. There will never be a more loved individual at ECU than Coach Le Clair. His legacy will continue long after we are all gone. He will touch the lives of countless people who won't even realize they are being changed until it has happened.

My wife and I were present at the first game in Clark-Le Claire Stadium as students. We feel very fortunate to have seen the Coach, there to witness his legacy before he passed. You are in our thoughts and we wish the best for you in this time of grief. Now, more than ever, the Pirate Nation stands as one, in honor of a great man.
-James Mauldin

Lynn, Audrey and JD...This earth has lost a great man but Heaven has just received an incredible winner. I never met coach personally but I had the pleasure of watching him on the field. Lynn, as you know, he is now healed and I know you have the comfort of seeing him again soon. Audrey and JD, you have had the pleasure of having a great man for a father. You have been blessed. My family has been praying and will continue to pray for your family. Coach LeClair has left a wonderful legacy. Thank you for sharing him. Many lives have been touched by him. We will miss him. God bless you all.
-Vann Powell (ECU '77)

He was a true pirate and brought so much to many lives. Our prayers and thoughts are with your family at this time.
-Elizabeth

I never really liked watching baseball until Keith LeClair became the coach of ECU. He brought an aura to the Pirates which you had to witness in order to understand. Now, of course, I'm a Pirate baseball fan for life. My two boys, Reed 10 and Josh 8, always scramble to see Coach LeClair getting out of the van when he makes it to a game. I can't think of a better role model for my children; his character will continue to serve as an inspiration for me through the challenges of my own life.
-Chris Padgett

Our thoughts and prayers are with the LeClair family. He was a great man, coach and ambassador for ECU.
-Stewart and Joan Bray

As a student at ECU and a fan of ECU baseball, I want to wish your family all the best in the years to come. Coach LeClair inspired many people in the ECU community as well as throughout the college baseball world. I'm sure ECU will make it to Omaha and Coach LeClair will be smiling from heaven when that happens. He will be with all of you always. May God comfort all of you now and forever.
-Landon Autry

To Lynn, Audrey and JD - please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God comfort you during this time, and may He bless your family as He blessed so many others through Keith.
-Jeff and Lee Ann Joyner

We have been blessed to have known Keith and Lynn LeClair. Our son John was fortunate to have played for Coach LeClair. We will always be thankful for John's opportunity to play and learn from him. He was a man of honor and integrity and instilled those qualities in his players. His legacy will live on through his players and through their families and all of the lives Keith LeClair touched. It was an honor and privilege to have known him and we will remember him always.
-Dave and Rita Poppert

My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family. Although, I did not personally know Keith; as an avid Pirate fan for many years I have keep up with him. I've never followed a stronger, more courageous, more loved person. Keith was a great baseball coach, but an even greater human being. May God bless your family.
-Allen Hawks (Mebane, NC)

Thank you for sharing Keith LeClair with us! What an inspiration and testimony to all who ever heard of him; and to all who will hear of him for many years to come.
-Glenda B. McLawhorn (ECU '69)

I worked at the baseball games while I attended ECU and Coach Leclair was the nicest coach I ever met while working with ECU. I am very proud of how he represented the university and more proud of how he faced his illness with such great heart and faith. ECU and the world need more people like Coach Leclair.

God be with you all during this time.

Best regards,
-Charles F Wade Jr. (ECU '01)

Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with you at this time..Keith set the finest example by the way he lived his life, the enthusiasm and passion in which he coached and taught will live with his players and friends forever. He truly touched our lives as a family, and forever will be grateful that he called us friends.
-Mark, Vickie, Rachael and Chris Harris

My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family. Although, I did not personally know Keith; as an avid Pirate fan for many years I have kept up with him. I've never followed a stronger, more courageous, more loved person. Keith was a great baseball coach, but an even greater human being. May God bless his family.

The entire O'Sullivan family wishes to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of Coach LeClair. He was the main reason that our son, Kevin, chose to attend ECU, and we are all deeply saddened at Coach's passing. He will be forever in our thoughts.
-Jim O'Sullivan

May the memories he left within your heart help to ease your pain.
-Janice Baynard

My thoughts and prayers to you all. He was and shall remain a great inspiration.

God bless.
-Irving Bennett

Coach LeClair was a great ambassador in the game of baseball as well as a human being. He has brought this pirate nation together in so many ways. God bless you, coach!!
-David Rose

Although you have not met all of us in the Pirate family you have touched our lives in many ways. You have inspired so many of us in these last few years. I can only wait for the day when my newborn son is old enough to go to his first pirate game and have a catch with his dad in the jungle and I can tell him about the greatest man to ever don a pirate uniform. Thank you. You will be missed and never forgotten.
-Pete Balent (ECU '99)

23 will live on in the jungle...I never met you but my dad prayed for you once and you touched his heart with your heart.....you will be missed!
-M. Clark (ECU '97)

You are in my thoughts and prayers. He was a wonderful man and an inspiration to countless others. I'm sure you are all able to take comfort in knowing that he is in Heaven.
-Nathan Weeks

This is both a terribly sad day for all Pirate fans but also a day to rejoice. Coach Leclair has gone to a wonderful place and has been released from his earthly handicap. I pray that you and your family will take strength from all those who care about you and the strength your husband/father displayed. I never met coach Leclair but feel that I too have lost a member of my family. My family's prayers are with you.
-Phil Holshouser

I know how much going to Omaha meant to you. You were one inning away on two occasions (one at both WCU and ECU). Rest easy buddy, they say where you are at now is like being in Omaha everyday. You deserve it. Going to miss you.
-Todd Raleigh

My thoughts and prayers are with the LeClair family. Keith LeClair put the passion back in me for baseball...specifically college baseball. He touched so many lives and was an inspiration in so many ways. One day in the future I will be sitting in Rosenblatt watching the Pirates play. When I hold up my sign with "Keith" on it, I'll be expecting him to sprinkle a little of his coaching magic on the Pirates.
-Randy Evans

Like so many others, I am a better person today for having spent time with Keith. He respected everyone, regardless of their title, status or position. He pushed those around him to be the best they could be, no matter what they had to overcome to reach their dreams. And he made people smile, with both his great sense of humor and his inspiring leadership. My thoughts and prayers are with the LeClair family.
-Jerry Trickie

My prayers go out to the family of coach Leclair. He has impacted far more lives than people would ever think possible, on and off the field. I came into this program under him still as the head skipper, never getting a chance to see what he did on the field I heard many stories of his attitude and love for the game. I can speak for myself as well as many other pirate players that played after his reign as coach and say that he has brought this program to another level. #23 will never be forgotten.
-Jason Neitz

Prayers and thoughts with the family. Keith had such an influence on so many peoples lives, both young and old.
-Stephen Coley

Keith LeClair touched many lives through playing and coaching baseball. However, GOD used Keith to touch so many more hearts through ALS. He referred to Philippians 4-13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" when posting on a caring bridge web site to my good friend and Pirate, Chris Carter, when he was battling cancer.

God Bless the LeClair Family. I know your eyes swell with tears, but your heart swells with pride.
-Jay Surles and Family

We were so blessed to have you as part of our lives.

You were a wonderful inspiration to so many people, and now you are with the Lord. Your faith and inspiration were inspiring, and you gave us so much more than we could ever give back to you. I thank you for what you did for us, but our thanks could never be enough. I know you will have no more suffering now, and I pray for your family in their loss. Your dedication and faith has been rewarded now, and your legend will live on. Godspeed!
-Tripp Hogg (ECU '91)

Mrs. Leclair and family,
I'm am so sorry about your loss. Coach Leclair was a huge impact in my life and I owe everything that I have learned to coach. I wish you the best and I'm sorry that I will not be able to attend the funeral. I know that coach is in a better place where he is loved by everyone here just as much as he is loved up there. I wish you the best and I hope to see see yall in the fall.

Best Wishes and Love,
-Darryl Lawhorn

My thoughts go out to the LeClair family. Coach LeClair was a wonderful man who taught us a great deal about the game of baseball but also about life. Many of the things I learned while playing for Coach are still be used today. His determination to be successful ran over into the players that he coached and many of us would not have gotten to where we did without him. He will be missed!
-Jason Colquitt (1997-98)

Coach LeClair's toughness should serve as an example to anyone and everyone out there. My deepest sympathy goes out to the LeClair Family, as well as East Carolina and West Carolina. May the Lord bless and keep you, Coach.
-Kendall Rogers

We have been inspired and awed by Coach LeClair and his family for years. Their devotion to one another and to Christ have provided a path for all of us to follow. May you find peace in the knowledge that Coach taught so many of us how to truly live this life. You are in our prayers.
-The Dewey Preast Family

Those who live in the hearts of others....

Never die. May the love of God, friends and family be a source of comfort to you at this time.

Forever a Pirate
Forever "23"

-Shelia Brickhouse (Montgomery, Ala.)

I never had the pleasure of knowing Keith, but I could tell just how important he was to our community. As an ECU graduate, I can tell you that he meant a great deal to the university. I understand that he was an even better person than he was a coach, and that says a great deal about Keith's character. My condolences and best wishes to all of Keith's family and friends!

Sincerely,
-Stephen Hill

Some of the greatest moments I have ever had as a ECU fan were because of the pride and joy I felt watching Keith's teams play. He was a wonderful coach, but an even better man. God bless his family, Rest now Keith with Jesus.
-Jim Copeland (Fuquay Varina)

I had the pleasure of attending the first ECU game, Coach LeClair coached and many others after that. Without a doubt, Coach LeClair was the very best baseball coach I have ever seen. His ability to motivate young men was unbelievable. He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family!
-Gene Wall (Salisbury, N.C.)

Words cannot express the emotions that we feel at this time. Keith has meant so much to our family. He was and will always be an inspiration - both on and off the field. His witness will never be forgotten and his legacy will live on.
-Ron and Barbara Hastings

My deepest condolences to the LeClair family. Your husband, father and son was a great leader and inspiration to everyone who either knew him or knew of him. He will be sorely missed. May the Lord's blessings be with each of you in this time or sorrow. -George Rhodes (ECU '63) We are truly humbled by the inspiration provided by Coach LeClair especially during his illness. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with Lynn, Audrey, J.D. and every member of the LeClair family.
-Nate and Jo Ann Weavil

Be strong and proud everyone; those of you who knew him, played for him, called him Husband or Father, or were simply touched by the strength of his spirit. The strength and presence of Keith LeClair has torched a legacy that will burn not only within the Pirate Nation, but also within all that knew or will come to know of him.
-The Eldridge's (Rick, Angie, and Harrison)

Just wanted to add to my previous note say little saying that coach would use often during games and in everyday life "gimmie crickets""" love you coach and once again my thoughts and prayers go out to all and it was an honor to call you "coach".
-Joe Jack Sellers (WCU 1992-95)

Coach LeClair was a combination of all the things that make a great man. He loved his family. He was exceptional in his vocation, he was a great coach. He inspired others. Most importantly, he walked every day with Christ. East Carolina athletics has always been fun for me. Keith LeClair made it even more fun. He will be missed.
-Alec French

He showed us how to win and how to live. He made us proud and Omaha is not as far away from Greenville as it once was because of Keith. God bless.
-Bill Tew

How wonderful it is to know that Coach will always be with us. By touching so many lives he left a great legacy -- one that I hope my son will follow. Thank you for sharing him with all of us. You have provided inspiration to many by your actions and I am grateful to be a part of that. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you now and always. God bless.
-Linda June-Fowler

Coach LeClair was such an incredible man who left a historic and lasting legacy at ECU. He was an absolute inspiration to us all in how he led his life and led his players.

We are all richer for it...

May God be with the LeClair family during this very difficult time and the entire East Carolina family.
-Mark Lindsay

I am a fellow high school classmate Of Keith's, and am also a sports editor who has followed his fight with ALS closely over the last few years. I would like to say, from all of Keith's 1984 Fall Mountain classmates, that we love you Keith. We know you are in a better place now and we will never, ever forget you. God bless you Lynn, and your family.

Love and respect,
-Joe Milliken (classmate, North Walpole, NH)

If anyone could be one half the person that Keith was, God would be well pleased. He was not only an excellent baseball player, coach, father, and husband; but most of all he was a true man of God. Keith has shown us all that life is worth living, live it to the fullest and never give up! If I could pick three words to describe Keith it would be "Man of Honor". I believe anyone who knew Keith would agree. He has touched all of our hearts and lives. My prayers, as always, go out to Lynn, Audrey, JD and the rest of the family who have been so unselfishly devoted to him and his care.
-Tracy W. Lance

Lynn,
I can't begin to tell you how much Keith meant to my son, Jeff Sziksai, and to me. Keith's example as a coach and as a Christian mentor will always guide Jeff in his coaching career and personal life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God bless.
-Cathy Credle

Lynn, you are a true champion. May God comfort you and the family in knowing that one day all Christians will rejoice in his Kingdom in the presence of the Lord.

Life on earth is short you see generations come and go If you know the Lord and trust in thee Heaven he will bestow

One day we will all be in Heaven and I will see him there And when I do I'll shake the hand of our Coach, Keith LeClair

May God Bless You All
-Teresa and Terry Savage

I did not know Coach LeClair personally, but I did know of him and what an inspiration he was to his players and the entire athletic department. His courage and determination was something that I believe has instilled in all of us a sense of how strong and determined we have to be reach our goals. I pray for each of you and extend my deepest sympathy to each of you! God bless you!
-Jackie Daniels

We had the privilege of knowing Coach LeClair and his family during the 1999 season. It was clear what an incredible coaching talent this man had. His team was successful and the players, coaches and fans loved & respected him. I will always remember his patience (and playfulness) as his daughter and mine (each about 4 yrs old) would run circles around him as reporters interviewed him after games. Whenever I hear "What A Wonderful World" I think of Coach LeClair and always will. We will pray for God's love, comfort and strength for the LeClair family.
-Michael, Cindy and Olivia Ingram (Wilson, NC)

Please accept our condolences on the loss of your husband, father and son. We first met Keith in the spring of '97 when our son met with him about playing for WCU. At that time, we didn't understand his approach but as our son played on in college and a brief stint in the pros, we began to understand the wisdom of what he told us that day. It was even more remarkable that he was so young. He will be greatly missed.
-Ray and Janet O'Kelly

Please accept my deepest and most sincere condolences. I feel truly fortunate to not only have had the chance to meet Keith, but to have had him represent East Carolina. He embodied what is best in mankind, and was a genuine sincere human being. I hope that you can take solace in the fact that he has touched the lives of so many people, both directly and indirectly; something that his spirit will continue to do. His courage is an inspiration to us all, and he has left an indelible mark on the world. He will continue to live on in all of our hearts, and may his legacy help to sustain your entire extended family in this, your most difficult hour.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your contributions to the communities of ECU and Greenville. You all have been an inspiration to many over the years. Coach, you brought a dignity and level of success to ECU Baseball and all of its athletic programs that will live eternally as an example of to do things 'the right way'. You legacy will live on in the hearts of all of the young men and fans that have witnessed your example of how to live life. I can't think of a more fitting tribute. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!
-Chip O'Rear

Although I did not know Keith Leclair and his family I certainly feel the loss. Not only was he a great baseball coach, he was a strong family man who cared for those around him, the example of Keith conducting bible studies and giving he senior players bibles speaks well of his convictions. as a 1981 ECU graduate, I know the Greenville community feels the loss. My prayers go out to the Leclair family. he indeed is in a better place.
-Randy Langley

My thoughts and condolences go out to you, the LeClair Family. It's times like these when great people who pass leave us with such great memories. Mine is back when the team was in the Super Regionals playing Tennessee. I was at home in Hampton, Va. The owner of the Peninsula Pilots, who is my neighbor was having a cook out for the ball players. The team plays in the Coastal Plains League, which is made up from players in the Southeast and East Coast during the summer months. I had players in from school such as NC State, Coastal Carolina, Winthrop, etc. teams that play ECU. We were keeping up with the game via the Internet and ALL these guys were pulling for ECU. No one was really attending the cook out except for families hosting the ball players, and friends, etc. Most of the ball players were in my home office just pulling for the PIRATES. Though the outcome wasn't in our favor, that TEAM was a winner for who they were playing for.

For a man I never knew personally, his passing has touched me in a way to motivate me to be a better person, a winner in life, business and my relationships. I close with a tear in my eye, one of at least knowing of someone who motivated me, even prior to his passing.
-John T. Bowman

Our deepest sympathy to the LeClair family. What a special man he was in his forty years. Our hearts are with you as we lost a wonderful Sister-in-Law, Jo Goudie, to ALS several years ago. Each year her family heads up a Walk at Ocean City, NJ (Sept. 30, 2006) to raise funds for Research-Research is the key for beating ALS someday.

North Carolina has ALS Walks in major cities, and we urge all to participate."God has no hands but our hands to do his work today." Dear LeClair Family please know you are in our thoughts and Prayers everyday.

Coach Keith LeClair has left a Legacy that will last for years and years to come! He was a real inspiration to me and to thousands of others, many of whom were not baseball fans. He impacted the lives of his players, the media, and was a role model for all those who knew him and loved him. Lynn, we admire you for being the wife you were to Keith and the wonderful way you loved and comforted him during his illness. Keith went from the loving arms of Lynn to the loving arms of Jesus. God's blessings upon you, J.D., and Audrey! I lost a friend who can never be replaced, only imitated. Phil. 4:13
-Clyde and Norma King

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Coach LeClair. My deepest sympathy is with you and all those that grieve at this time. God bless.
-Justine Allpress (Lady Pirate Basketball 1993-1997)

Dear Lynn, Audrey, and J.D.,
I was lucky enough to have met Keith at a father and son camp he held some 5 or 6 years ago in Greenville. I can't even begin to tell you how great and lasting the impression was he made on me and my son Davis that summer. He was a great teacher and coach, but even more important, a great human being.

When he became ill with ALS, literally right after our camp, it came as a shock and saddened all of us. The tribute to Keith was how bravely and positively he dealt with his illness. His faith and love for not only his family, but everyone he knew, in my opinion, was responsible for the longevity of his illness and how hard he fought to hang on to his life.

I never met anyone I had more respect with in my life than Keith LeClair, and I hardly knew him at all. But that impression he made on me that summer weekend meant a great deal to me and my son. That's what kind of person he was. He's the kind of man that every father wants his son to grow up to be.
-Bruce (ECU '74), Carol, Davis, and Emily Hall (Reston, Va.)

Keith changed forever the ideals of Baseball at ECU. The "We're Going" will forever be understood by ECU fans and alumni...who said it...what it means...the challenge to all who ever wear the purple and gold. Thank you, God ... for Keith.
-Dick Bennett (Liberty, NC)

Coach LeClair was a great man and a great coach but, even more so, a great person and mentor!!! My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends!! I wouldn't be where I'm at right now if it wasn't for him and I thank him for that!! God Bless.
-Trevor Lawhorn

May God continue to give you and your family strength at this difficult time. Keith LeClair may be gone in body, but his spirit will live on forever at East Carolina University!
-Patrick Pearce (ECU '85)

Our prayers and love go to Lynn, Audrey and J.D. Our family was blessed to have known Keith and his family. Keith was not just a coach to our son, he was a mentor and friend. Keith was truly committed to the well-being of his players. We will never forget his visits to the hospital and his prayers when Neal was hospitalized with pneumonia, all while he was dealing with his own illness. There was only one Keith LeClair and we were truly blessed to have know him and he will live in our hearts forever!
-Calvin and Cindy Sears

Though I never knew Coach LeClair, I have heard numerous stories in UNCW's Baseball Office about "Coach LeClair." The coaches in our office had nothing less than respect for Coach LeClair, as a coach and as a dignified man. His contagious character has been an asset to the game of baseball (coaches, players, and fans). Today, I pray that God comforts the many aching hearts and soothes the hurting souls of all of those who knew and respected Keith LeClair. May his family be comforted by the eternal memories of their beloved relative, and rest assured that each of them may meet him at the pearly gates of Heaven. May you hold God's hand in the days to come and walk in His path, for He will never fail you. God bless you all.
-Amy Denson (UNCW Baseball Student Assistant)

Coach LeClair will be greatly missed by the ECU family, and always admired and fondly remembered in the spirit of good sportsmanship and great baseball. Coaches are leaders, mentors, and friends, and often the single most influential person in an athlete's growth as a human being. I am sure Coach LeClair is exactly that to many blessed ECU baseball players, and also to his family and many others whose lives he touched.
-Catherine Boling (ECU '03)

I am a graduate of WCU in 1971. I followed the career of coach Leclair for many years as I was born and raised in Cullowhee. My prayers are with all the family. He truly was a great coach and person.
-David L. Woodard

The fact is that Keith is now with the Lord, and in a better place than any of us. His spirit will live on in the hearts of many people that he touched, and of course in the hearts of you guys, his family. Always know that his time on earth was well spent and he touched so many in a good way.
-Michael Norwood

May God bless and strengthen you. We were privileged to have had Coach LeClair be a part of our lives. He made us proud i'm so many ways.
-Walker and Betsy Allen

Coach fought the good fight, and now he rests. Thank you for sharing this man of great spirit and integrity with us. He will be missed, but not forgotten. God bless the LeClair family. With deepest sympathy. 23!
-Scott Peele

Hello Lynn, Audrey, JD sorry to hear about the passing of coach, but it is also a celebration that he doesn't have to suffer anymore and he gets to go home to see his Father our Lord and Savior. Coach was there for me like a father and showed me alot about baseball and life. I give him sole credit for my growth in my spiritual life because back in summer of 2001, coach LeClair had a talk with me about my walk with Christ. I know Keith served his purpose here on earth and touched many lives before and after the disease struck him. I love you all and my prayers and thoughts are with you all. GoD BLESS
-Kieran Mattison

-Mark, Michelle, Thomas and Allison Wharton

I am sorry for your loss. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you. I never knew Coach Leclair but all I ever hear about him were great stories and how his faith in God got him this far in life. I believe there is no doubt in anyone's mind that he is with God right now. He was an inspiration to many lives and will always be remembered by East Carolina fans. 23!

God Bless!!
-Kevin Cozart

Heaven has gained another angel. May your heavy hearts grief be brief and your memories everlasting! God Bless.
-Michael Darrow

Lynn, Audrey, and JD,
Keith was as incredible of a man off the field as he was on the field and I'm thankful for the time that I was able to spend with all of you. Thank you for welcoming me into your home and allowing me the opportunity to know your wonderful family. I will never forget the day that you came home from the Dr.'s with a unofficial diagnosis. I was just amazed at how Keith took this news and he never once looked back. His love for life and his humor were always with him. I remember the night that you and Keith came to my class as my guest speakers. One of the first remarks that Keith made was " She finally started cooking after I had the feeding tube put in". Its evident to all that know him and was remarked later that he truly was one of the strongest men to ever live.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Your family has and will always hold a special place in my heart. The man that was your husband and your father has the utmost respect from all that knew him and will continue to inspire people as his legacy lives on. All my love and sympathy. Keith will be dearly missed by all.
-Martha Raleigh

All you can ask for in life is the chance to make a difference in other's lives. Keith accomplished that. In many ways..... Thinking about the LeClair Family at this time.
-Duane Grooms (ECU '80 and '82)

How can you possibly put into words what a true inspiration Coach LeClair was to anyone who ever got the privilege to meet or hear about his story? His legacy will live on in the lives of the thousands he touched. All of his players are where they are today because of him. My prayers and thoughts are with you Lynn, JD, and Audrey.
-Jill Hastings

May you rest in peace, Coach.
-Howard Rambeau

I had the privilege to be associated with ECU baseball and Coach LeClair for this past year although was not able to play for him. My family and I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Coach LeClair's family. His legacy with ECU baseball will be with us forever. We are thankful for the time he had to with us.
-Ryan Wood and Family

I am pretty sure Coach LeClair was inspired by this Scripture during his illness. And, I hope and trust and pray it will serve to inspire you as well at the present time.
-Tom Dellinger

Coach will be truly missed. A great man who turned many boys into men and inspired those who did and didn't play for him. God bless you and yours during this time. Forever #23.
-Ernie Lane

Sorry for your loss Keith was a great influence in my nephews life. Mark felt lucky to know him as a coach and person. God bless.
-Mike Cabot (Mark Minicozzi's uncle)

May god bless your family and thank you for everything your family has done for East Carolina University.
-Mickey Foster ('94)

Wow, he will be greatly missed in Pirate Country and baseball in general. He was an absolutely phenomenal person who was as humble as they get! He made a difference in so many young peoples lives. He battled Lou Gehrig's disease just like he battled opposing teams! He's in a better place now and my thoughts and prayers go out to his beautiful family. His children definitely had a true christian leader and inspiration to look up to! GOD BLESS!
-Rowell-Dnees

God bless the entire LeClair family for the loss of Coach LeClair. I feel I am fortunate to have played and learned from "Coach". I'll never forget the lessons he taught his players. One in particular is he always reminded us the life and the baseball season wasn't a sprint but rather a marathon and we should be thankful for every moment we had. We will miss you Coach but will never forget you.
-Kevin Grieve (WCU 1996-98, ECU 1998-2001)

Coach LeClair was the epitome of class, talent and teacher. As a former East Carolina athlete I was always extremely proud of the job he did and how his teams competed - hard, fair and never give up. From what I can tell he led his life the same way. East Carolina University is better for his coaching there and he will missed but not forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Sincerely,
-Joe Zahran (ECU '78)

Coach LeClair did so much in a short time. He put the whole process in motion for all pirate sports to always have a POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE and all things will work out. LeClair Family you will always be in our prayers

God Bless
-PIRATES FAN

I never met Coach LeClair personally but I remember seeing him at many an ECU baseball game during my time there. What an amazing man to help make those Pirates what they are today. The wonderful thing about a college town, like Greenville, is that everyone gets to know the coaches and their family. He was loved and respected by Greenville and his Pirate family. Your family will be in thoughts during this difficult time. Please find hope in the fact there are many Pirates who were greatly touched by Coach LeClair's life, even those who had never met him!
-Kim Saunders (ECU '03)

Dear Lynn, Audry and JD,

Our family extends many heartfelt prayers to you all. Coach was a model and inspiration to our son Luke both on and off the field. Thank you all for letting Luke be a part of your lives during his time at ECU. He is greatly enriched by knowing you all and thereby we are too. May you have wonderful memories of Coach always.

Sincerely,
-John and Gayl Cherry (parents of Luke Cherry 04')

Hi, my name is Zack Bishop of Newtown, PA. I'm terribly saddened to learn of Coach LeClair's passing. I first met Coach in 1998 when I was playing football at ECU. Most athletes and coaches would pass each other at some point, and he always gave a friendly hello. A couple years later my younger brother Matt was a senior in high school, and a halfway decent pitcher. He had a fair amount of interest from colleges, but not a the big offer he was hoping for. Coach LeClair did promise Matt a chance, and that was all he wanted. Coach LeClair turned out to be one of my brother's heroes. I feel like I know the man so well, just because my brother would talk to me about how much he admired and respected the man. My thoughts and prayers, along with the rest of the Bishop family are with you and yours in this time of mourning. Unfortunately Matt won't be able to attend any of the gatherings this weekend, as he is currently playing within the Pittsburgh Pirates organization....an opportunity I'm sure he holds Coach LeClair responsible for.
-Zack Bishop

Lynn,

Have thought of you and your family so many, many times. Sorry we didn't let you know that. We are so sorry your family has had to travel on such a rocky road in life. We fully believe Keith isn't dead, but just moved on to Heaven but know you will miss him greatly. We pray you and your family will adjust to your new life well and without too many problems. Love in Christ.
-Etheree and Paul Chancellor

Eleven years ago Keith LeClair came into our lives to get Kevin to come to Western Carolina to play baseball. He was a wonderful role model, friend, teacher and character builder to Kevin. Keith will be missed by so many people but he also is loved by so many. Kevin was lucky enough to play at Western for Keith and then to play at ECU for him. Our family will miss him and our prayers go out to his family, especially Lynn, Audrey and JD. May the Lord be with you and bring peace to your hearts.
-Marilyn and Dennis Grieve

The good lord gives us blessings in our lives and also challenges us to understand our purpose. sometimes it's hard to understand what that purpose is, obviously Keith led his life in the lords way with no questions asked. He will be missed in this lifetime and an inspiration to those people whose life he has touched.
-John Parsons and Family

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I pray God will continue to comfort you in your time of loss. Coach Leclair is no longer suffering. I truly feel honored to have been associated with Coach Leclair @ my 2yrs at WCU.

God Bless you,
-Kevin Wilhoit (WCU '94)

I know this has been a very tough journey for you and my families prayers go out to you in your time of sorrow. My partner here in Greensboro is a WCU grad and we have had many joyous conversations over Keith's' successes at both institutions. He will be missed but never forgotten. May God Bless you and watch over you as you move forward in your lives.
-Mitchell Hunt (ECU '69)

I had the honor of playing side by side with Keith in High School. I could see than what a special person he was and will always be. Keith it is a honor to call you a friend and teammate. You will be missed dearly. Rest in peace my friend. God bless the LeClair family. Stay strong.
-Tim Hennessey (Keene, NH)

I was deeply saddened to hear of Coach LeClair's death. I admired his bravery throughout his illness. He has left ECU a better place because he has been a part of it.
-Billy Greene

Please accept our sympathy in your great loss. I never met Coach LeClair but was moved by his passion for people, baseball but most importantly his faith.

Thank You for Sharing Keith with us.

God Bless.
-Kevin, Tammy and Brantley Cutler

I had the honor of watching Coach LeClair touch the lives of many young men as Head Baseball Coach at Western Carolina. My brother, Chad, had the privilege of playing for him (1993-1996). One of the qualities I admired most about Keith was that he was a man of integrity, one who led by example. He was committed...committed to God, his family, and to his love of the game. He had a passion for life. His energy was unavoidably contagious, particularly when he was wearing purple and gold. The standard he set for his players was excellence, both on and off the field. He expected no less of himself.

Catamount practice t-shirts reflected his attitude about winning games..."TEAM OVER ME" - Success involves each person's commitment and dedication. Even then, he was teaching a greater lesson, that every person is valuable. I have no doubt that Coach LeClair influenced my brother's career choice - Today, he's the principal and baseball coach of a Christian school.

Coach LeClair's life is an inspiration to us all -To his family, thank you for sharing him with us, "his extended family of players and fans". Coach LeClair influenced many and he'll be remembered in our hearts always!
-Christal Moore-Taylor (WCU '94)

To LeClair's & Winchesters,

I'm sorry to hear about your loss and hope you can find comfort that Keith was loved and respected by so many. I know you feel like you can't thank the people enough who supported Keith and your family during these last few years. I feel blessed to have witnessed the tremendous support by your Friends, Neighbors, Community and the University. Even as Keith was living with ALS he was teaching us all about life and how Love and Friendship is so important. I was blessed to know Keith when he was young and play baseball with him. His hard work is an example to us all that if you want something you can achieve it. It was fun to watch Keith turn into the person he did--from the friend who I always played catch with before each game to the well respected Father & Coach. I'll keep my arm loose for some BP later.
-Dean Gay & Theresa O'Hearn Gay (high school classmates)

Rest in peace 23. Know that you will always be a part of the Pirate family. Setting an example for us all as a father, husband, coach and leader of moral ground. You are leaving behind a level of goodness we all hope to reach in our own lives!
-David, Amy, Chloe, Camryn and Tyler Hegel

As long as Coach LeClair name is memtion.....he will never be forgotten; therefore, Coach will live with all of us forever. God bless Mrs. Coach and the family!
-Charles Chambliss and Family

What a joy for you to have had Keith as a husband and father. To have suffered as he did without complaint and to have been such a champion for Christ in the way he lived has been such an inspiration to so many, including my son Jeff. He now is experiencing the great joy that he passed on to so many. Home at last!
-Jim Sziksai

Coach LeClair was an example of all that is good in this world. May God bless your family as we keep you in our prayers.
-Perry and Amanda Hudson

I remember being impressed with Keith the first time I met him as a freshman at Western Carolina and grew to admire and respect him daily as I had the honor of working closely with him when he was our head baseball coach. Lynn, Audrey and J.D., your husband and father was more than a great player and coach...he was a special human being.
-Steve White (Former Western Carolina Sports Information Director)

I only met Keith one time & that was when he was helped our local high school team with a practice facility (ECU field) during a Easter visit to Greenville, probably 1997 or 1998, for participation in the Hot Stove tournament. We did not have a field to even take some batting practice. Keith met us at the field for use of the facility. A good guy and he will certainly be missed by a lot of people.
-Ralph Lamm (ECU Baseball 1968-70)

#23 sure did mean a lot to the Eason Clan-we are all saddened for his passing, but also relieved that he is in a better place. He packed a lot of life into his short years and left a great pirate legacy. Our family always enjoyed being around you at numerous games and was inspired by Keith and the tremendous battle he put up with the fight against ALS. I don't have to say what he meant to Tommy-God bless you and the rest of the family and thank you Keith for your inspiration!
-Bob Eason and Family

I never met Coach Leclair in person, but nevertheless he touched my life and countless others. His example of faith and courage will live on years from now. I'm thankful for the great gift of Coach Leclair that we were allowed to borrow for what turned out to be such a short time. May the good Lord keep and comfort you.
-Roger Greene

I cry and laugh out loud when I stop to remember Coach LeClair. I cry at the thought of what kind of person I might have been had I not known him. I cry when I remember splashing his van with a cooler full of ice water after winning the 2002 C-USA Championship. I cry when I think of how he helped to transform my life when I needed it the most.

However, I laugh when I think of the great times we shared with him on and off the field. I laugh when I remember him showing young kids how to slide on the wet slip and slide during ECU baseball camps. I also laugh when I think of him giving me a hard time for wanting to wear flip-flops ALL the time.

But you can believe I will be at the service on Friday with my flip-flops on, a tear in my eye, and a smile on my face.

Coach, I love you and I thank you. Great is your reward in Heaven!
-Davey Penny (ECU '03)

I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the LeClair Family. I was fortunate enough to have seen Coach Leclair in action. There was no other man who gave as much of himself to his team, and cared more deeply for his players than Coach. He will be greatly missed within the Pirate Nation. He was a hero to us all, but he will long be remembered as a legend.

"There are heroes, and their are legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die."
-Brandon Howard (ECU '05)

May god comfort you in your time of need.
-Kenneth Adams

Your grief is shared, your heartache known by Him who calls you as His own. Your grief is shared by others, too- others that love and care for you. Praying for renewed hope and strength.
-Becky and Teck Bass

The true measure of a man is not the height that he reached in his life, but the number of people he brought with him to that level.

You need look no further than the number of people on this message board to know the level that Keith reached.
-Tom Hoyt (West Lebanon, NH)

I never had the privilege to meet Coach LeClair.

I worked under Coach Todd Raleigh, at Western Carolina. Through the impact that Coach LeClair had on Western Carolina Baseball, and Coach Raleigh, I felt that I knew him well. His Impact and Legacy will last Forever.
-David Jolly (Former Strength & Conditioning Coach - Western Carolina University)

Grateful is what we feel when we think of Keith LeClair. We moved here the same year as Coach LeClair, knowing no one. But there was this new coach that was coaching the ECU baseball team with a philosophy rare in sports, with total heart and soul. Now, every season, watching games is a family tradition we are proud to share with our children and it has made us feel at home here. We believe God worked through Coach LeClair to touch many lives in a positive and inspirational way. All of his efforts on behalf of the ECU family will be felt forever. We hope that serves as a source of comfort at this time. We will always remember 23.
-Tim and Ali Mahoney

My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family. I had the pleasure of being a teammate of Keith's for 3 years and WCU. For having Keith as a part of my life I fill truly honored.
-Gary Shamp (WCU '87)

If I had a favorite student while teaching at Fall Mountain Regional, Keith was it. He was so well mannered and conscientious all the time. Sports was a common thread for us and I enjoyed him immensely while knowing him at FMRHS and enjoyed following his tremendous success ever since at WCU and ECU. They do not come any better than Keith LeClair.
-Tom Haley

Lynn, JD and Audrey you should be PROUD to have the name Leclair! Your husband/father was an inspiration to me and my family and I will always think of Coach as a father. I am sorry for the loss that you are going through right now but I know Coach he would not want you to hang your heads for any reason. ECU will forever fight for what Coach wanted the most for his players, his fans and his University, a trip to OMAHA! God bless you all and thank you for the man that you allowed us become close with and to love. I LOVE YOU COACH! #23.
-Cory Scott (ECU Baseball 1998-2000)

Our prayers are with your family today. I had a chance to see Coach just this year for the first time when WCU dedicated him and retired his number on the left field fence. My son played ball for WCU last year and I will always cherish the picture of him and his teammate holding the bats over you and your family as you came out on the field. He was much loved and respected as was well evident that night. God Bless.
-Hallam Family

God Bless the LeClair family.. Coach is with his Lord now. The Pirate Nation is blessed to have had the Coach represent and be a part of us.
-Paul "Shorty" Michael

I send you my deepest sympathies. my father is a member of the pirate club and a staunch supporter of all pirate athletics. he thought so much of the way coach LeClair handled the team and then the way he handled his illness with dignity and class. stay true to your faith and let god guide you through this difficult time. god bless your entire family.
-Clay Parker (Hickory, NC)

In 2002 I came down to ECU as a high school senior searching for a University to call my own for the next four years. In my search for colleges ECU stood out for many reasons but I always recall one more than any other. In mid February the Pirates were playing a baseball game against Delaware and I noticed businessmen and women were in business dress attire as they filled the bleachers - I was sold on the spot. And I have no doubt that this was due to Coach LeClair's program. I am sure Coach LeClair touched many lives and was loved by all who knew him. I hope his family finds peace and comfort at this time.
-Jason Faulkner

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire LeClair family. The Pirate Family was blessed to have someone that demonstrated true faith, character, love and passion for people and athletics. Indeed, he was a chosen man to touch thousands of lives.
-Eddie Crabtree (ECU Football 1992-96)

Although I never personally met Coach LeClair, I had a high degree of respect for him. It was not because of his success as a player and coach. My admiration came from his love of God, family and the game itself. All my impressions of him were so positive. Young people today are sorely lacking on the basic values of honesty, integrity and character. Coach LeClair possessed all these qualities and more. The Pirate Nation was fortunate to have had him impact our program and our lives I'm sorry for your loss of a husband and father, but I rejoice that Coach LeClair is now with his Father in heaven and is no longer trapped in a body that had given out. May he always be remembered with warm, loving thoughts.
-Todd Harris (ECU '86 and '88)

My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. What an inspiration he was to so many! God bless you all.
-A Pirate Fan in Raleigh

My thoughts & prayers go out to the family of Coach LeClair. Having worked with him, he made quite an impression as a devote family & Christian man. He always treated everyone affiliated with his program with the utmost respect and admiration. His legacy will forever live on at ECU. God Bless!
-Jeff Boyer

We appreciated the opportunity to meet Keith and his family at Oakmont Baptist while visiting the Nelson Coopers in Greenville. On behalf of the Cooper's extended family in Statesville, NC, we offer our condolences, prayers, and admiration. Thank you for sharing your lives as a wonderful example of God's loving promise to His children. Respectfully,
-Parks and Katie Collins

My condolences to the LeClair Family.

Coach LeClair was an inspiration to all of us in the Pirate Nation. He will be missed !
-Troy Epps

My condolences to the LeClair family. My aunt had passed away from this terrible disease, so I know a little bit about what your family has gone through over the years.

May the happy memories that you have of him help you get through the rough times.

He will be missed by the entire ECU community.
-Jeffrey A. Paules (ECU '92)

To the LeClair Family,
I played for Coach LeClair at WCU from 1991-1995. Coach was very special to me and made a positive impact in my life. My prayers are with you. Thanks for sharing him with us.
-Chad Moore

"23" (and the family) will forever be in Pirate's Hearts!
-Pirate Fan

Keith graced our lives during his time with us and for those of us lucky enough to have known him we can take comfort in his presence with our LORD. Keith will always be remembered for his positive outlook and his great smiles. He was a leader before others even thought about leading. He is what athletics can and should be about, i.e.. making a difference in other peoples lives.

We will miss his presence, but we will rejoice in his memory.

God bless.
-Terry Wanless

Lynn, Audry and JD. Keith was a truly a one in a million. I was blessed to spend time with Keith at Western Carolina 1984-1986 were we had been roommates and teammates. I couldn't have met a better person in my life. God bless.
- Al Donovan (WCU/ Lynn, MA)

Keeping you in our prayers, we admired Coach Leclair ever since we met him when he recruited my nephew Mark Minicozzi we enjoyed coming to North Carolina every year for the LeClair classic and will continue to support the cure for Lou Gehrig's Disease our hometown Philadelphis Phillies have a fund raiser every year that we participate in and will continue in honor of Coach LeClair.
-Theresa Cusella

Lynn and kids
I know it is very hard to lose such a great person you love, but you have to know he is now at peace with the Lord. He will always be there in your hearts. Know that Keith impacted many people with his courage and strength while battling ALS. He will always be remembered as a man who impacted many young men. I know my son, Brian, respected and admired Keith both as a coach and a man. He learned many life lessons from him and has become a outstanding young man. When he received the #23 jersey, that meant so much to him. He played that senior year with such desire because he knew that was what coach expected. ECU lost an icon but the impact he made both on the program and on its players will never be forgotten.
-Gina Cavanaugh

Lynn, Audrey,& JD,

My prayers go out to you during this difficult time but I know we all take comfort in knowing Keith is in a better place and is no longer suffering. I feel very fortunate to have grown up with Keith in Walpole, NH. I have many fond memories of Keith as a teammate on numerous baseball teams but above all else as a friend. In recent years as he battled ALS his courage, determination, and faith was an inspiration to all. His daily devotionals not only touched me greatly but his reach and influence seemingly multiplied as his email list grew larger and larger. One thing I'll never forget is the time another friend (Steve Larkin) and I visited Keith shortly after he had been relegated to a wheelchair and he was communicating through his keyboard and the first thing he does is crack a few jokes to lighten the mood. Despite all that he was going through he hadn't lost his sense of humor.

Keith, your inspiration lives on! I feel truly blessed to have been your friend.
-Brian Chandler (Hillsborough, NC)

My family includes alumni from East Carolina, Western Carolina and Clemson and we are all baseball fans. Although I did not know Keith personally, I was deeply touched by the articles I read and the wonderful things that were said about him by friends and coaches. He touched a lot of lives in such a positive way. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.
-Carol Tucker

Lynn, Audry & JD - Just wanted to add our thoughts of deep love and respect for you and the legacy of "Coach LeClair". He was a great mentor for our son, Davey, who tremendously enjoyed playing baseball for him at ECU. From the beginning he was all about the "whole" person - not just baseball ability. We really appreciate him supporting Chuck Young and the "Sportworks Ministry" program because it helped make good guys even better and more grounded in what's important...the spiritual quality of life and a closer walk with God...He knew the importance of loving those you care about with your whole heart and that "there is life after baseball". We love you guys and appreciate your friendship.
-Pat & David Penny (Benson, NC)

To Doris and The Leclair Family:
I am sorry Keith contracted ALS. It seems as though his fight was a brave one. My mother would always tell me about what was going on with him. Be strong and I just want you to know I am thinking of you.

-Matthew Tracy

I know there was a rejoicing in heaven on Monday when #23 made his way there. He was an amazing servant of who Jesus wants us all to be. My prayers are with your family and the people who surrounded Keith during his life. As a true Pirate fan we owe him a lot. He helped us all to see what the love of baseball, family, God, and the Pirates really should look like. I am looking forward to the day I get to shake his hand in heaven.
-Rebecca Davis

Lynn, Audrey, JD, Andy and Doris,
Words are so inadequate to express the love, admiration, and respect that I and thousands of others have not only for Keith, but for you his family. Nor are they adequate to express the profound and heartfelt sorrow of his passing. But I pray that God's word and promise of life eternal brings you comfort and peace during this difficult time, and the realization that even now His plan for Keith and you is still unfolding.
May God through his Holy Spirit surround you with his healing grace and love now and in the days ahead.
-Bill Pearce, Fayetteville, N.C.

I was blessed to have had the opportunity to meet Coach and his wonderful family. Coach was truly a special man and I have nothing but the up-most respect and admiration for him. I have also been fortunate enough to meet and befriend some of his former players. They exude his characteristics and are wonderful men today because of him. His life will be celebrated not only within the Pirate Nation but through the country as well. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
-Heather

My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the Leclair family. May God bless and watch over you during this very difficult time.
-T.P. Hutchinson (ECU Equipment Staff 2004)

Our deepest sympathy to the entire LeClair family. Coach LeClair was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege to know him. I can only imagine the impact he had on so many young men that were fortunate enough to call him Coach. He is and will always be the Heart and Soul of East Carolina Baseball!
-Henry and Lois Baker and Philip Powell

My deepest sympathies go out to the LeClair family and also to Coach LeClair's baseball family. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Coach, I feel that I have come to know him through my nephew, Mark Minicozzi. As I read the messages preceding my own, they confirm all that Mark had to say and feels about Coach LeClair. Coach's physical presence may be gone, but his spirit will live forever in each person he has touched. A legacy we can only hope to achieve in our lifetime.
-Cynthia Pastor

So sorry to hear that Coach LeClair lost the battle of life. But I know he was about challenges, winning, hard work and molding young mens lives. The ECU family will deeply miss him. Never had the pleasure of meeting him but have followed ECU baseball since I followed my high school friend and team mate, Lacy West, to ECU in 1961. My thoughts and prayers are with the LeClair family and the ECU baseball program.
-John Barnes (Cashtown, Pa.)

To the LeClair family, I am sorry for your loss. May God, and the love of family and friends help you build strength to carry on one day at a time. My heart sank when I heard the news of Coach LeClairs passing. He was a great coach and person, and am happy to have known him.
-Rob Doherty (WCU 89-93)

Lynn, I met you when I used to work at Visage in Sylva years ago when I was putting myself through Western. I am one of the MANY Catamounts that was touched by Coach. Like so many others who have already posted, I too have tons of memories watching Coach from the stands as I attended nearly every home game during my time in WNC, but for me one of the most memorable moments I have of Coach LeClair is when I signed up to take "Coaching Baseball" at Western. As a girl, I knew this could set me up for being ridiculed by other students for being the only girl in the class, but I didn't care. I had a love for the game & I wanted to learn more and I feel so blessed to have been taught by the one and only Coach LeClair. He didn't bat an eye at me being the only girl in class. In fact he told me he admired me for it. I learned so much from him about baseball, as well as some other life tidbits. He was a leader, well respected and a legacy! My thoughts and prayers are with you.
-Jennifer DuPree (WCU)

Coach will always be in my and my husband's heart. I truly believe he was very instrumental in Cory's great college baseball career and his getting a degree from ECU. Without his support and belief in Cory, he would never have finished College. I know Cory was a challenge for Coach Leclair and Coach was up for that challenge and now my son has great memories of his College baseball days and as coach predicted, grown into a fine young man.
Love,
-Cindy and Cliff Scott

To Keith's family,
I am very much saddened by this news. I was a classmate of Keith's at WCU in 85-88. We shared several English classes, and I was struck at the time by his maturity and genuine kindness to everyone in all situations. I followed his career with pleasure at his considerable accomplishments. What a fine and fully grounded person he was - always seeming to balance the demands of sports with the even greater demands of being a decent human being. He will be missed.
Sincerely,
-Gordon Grant, ED.D (WCU '88)

Coach Leclair was just taking over the baseball program as i was beginning my collegiate tennis career at ECU. Even though I did not have the honor of meeting him or talking to him, his vision and passion for pirate baseball was felt and witness. Almost over night, an average team with good players became one of the most feared teams in NCAA baseball. Though im not a baseball player, ill always remember the regional marathons with LSU to name a few. May god be with you, Leclair Family, and he will guide you and direct you at this time of loss.
-Leshaun Jenkins (ECU Tennis 1997-00)

I never had the honor of meeting Coach LeClair and I have no connection with ECU. I did have the honor and pleasure af attending the tournament at which the stadium was dedicated. I travel quite a bit folowing my team. I have never attended an event where the respect, fondness and affection for any person was so strong and uniform as the people of ECU had for Coach LeClair. He surely was a magnificent man. My prayers are with his family and the ECU family.
-Herman Stephenson (Phoenix, Ariz.)

Coach LeClair will continue to be a symbol of courage and inspiration for generations of not only Pirates, but for everyone whose life he touched. My sincere condolences to the family. A wonderful man and Pirate will be missed but never forgotten.
-William Byrd (ECU '73)

I grew up in Bellows Falls, Vt. but now live in Chapel Hill, NC. Two of my daughters have ties to wonderful East Carolina University. When I realized the coach was a native of Walpole, NH I felt great. The great rivalries between BF and FMRH, the passionate fans of the Pirate nation. I send along my thoughts and prayers to your family and wish them only happy times for the rest of their lives. They deserve it. May the peace of God be with you always and with your family.
-Tim G.

LeClair Family- I knew of Keith when he was playing Little League and came to the Charlestown Tournaments. Although moving to Windsor in 1978, I am a Fall Mt. Grad and former Wildcat and Walpole Legion Baseball player. I have followed Keith's career and his unfortunate illness. I am deeply saddened by this and my prayers go out to your family. As a current Athletic Director and former Baseball coach myself I share the sport's loss of a fine human being.

God Bless you all,
-Bob Hingston

Keith was one of the finest men I have ever known. A natural leader on and off the field. Today I pulled out my baseball scrap book and looked at pictures remembering our team captain and friend, remembering hours on the field, in the cages and in the weight room. The last photo in my scrapbook was a newspaper clipping of winning the Southern Conference tournament - MVP Keith LeClair - a true Champion. He will be missed, but never forgotten. God bless and comfort you.
-Lynn Amos (WCU teammate, 1986-88)

To the LeClair family, my heart and prayers go out to you. I had the pleasure of playing against Keith while at Clemson and with him in summer ball in the Valley League. I was both saddened and happy as I read the many messages. Saddened for your family as no one can ever understand "why" this happens to a person so young, with such character, and devotion to God and family. But I also thought about all the good memories that bring watering eyes. What a competitor and leader! There were some serious lefties in that WCU lineup...LeClair, Nelloms, Fairy. And being a native of eastern NC, I was always proud to know how many people he touched there, what he did for ECU's program, and to hear hometown friends speak so highly of Keith though they had never met him. My regret is never calling or writing in support. I had Keith in my prayers as I talked with Maz very often and coach Leggett on occasions. It was very difficult for both of them to talk about without tearing. I know how much they loved Keith.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Catfish Hunter several times. We both played for coach Carter. Catfish devoted his last years as a spokesman to fight ALS and Diabetes. I challenge myself and everyone who reads this web page to donate money and contribute your time to fight this disease and honor Keith & Catfish.

God Bless your family and on to Omaha in '07. Go Pirates!
-Brian Barnes

My thoughts and prayers go out to the LeClair family. I am not associated with East Carolina University, but I am friends with those that are. My brother, Brian White, was also a victim of ALS. He was diagnosed at the age of 28, and died at 33. What a cruel disease. From what I know of your father/husband, he was a wonderful person. Please take comfort in your family and friends. The hard part is yet to come- when everyone is gone. Please remember that he is well, and walking in the land of the living!!! God takes the ones that he needs!!!

Take time, the pain will go away, but not your memories!
-Suzanne W. Cochran

When we look back on our lives, we all have those individuals that have molded who we are. For me those individuals were my parents and my coach, Keith LeClair. We are all blessed to have just known him, much less played for him. While we learned so much from him on the field, it is what he taught us off the field that will leave his legacy. His ministry and unwavering faith in the face of his illness shows his true character. We will miss him greatly. Lynn, Audrey, and JD, my prayers are with you and Thanks for sharing him with the rest of us!!
-Jason Howard (Former ECU Baseball Player 1996-99)

Hello, I met your father only once and it was brief. I did however receive the letters he wrote in my email. As a fellow believer it will be wonderful to get to know him in heaven.

Please know that there are many of us out here that he touched. I wish I could make your pain go away but I can do something greater and pray. I'm glad Keith knew what mattered most in life because at the end it was everything.

God's grace be on your family.
-Karen Feegle

Coach LeClair was a wonderful coach, but, most importantly he was the finest example of putting Christ and family first! Thank you to him for living his life with such grace! He is truly an example to live by. May he rest in peace, and you be comforted knowing that he will live on forever! Our prayers are with you.
-Lee, Stephanie & Aubrey Warren

Lynn,
Many times I have questioned why God chooses the best of his children to be with Him in heaven. My mom, who is now in heaven with our Savior, would always respond by saying, "When we go into the garden to pick the roses, don't we always pick the best? Why do we expect God to do anything less." My mom's wisdom abides with me each and every day. Lynn, God chose Keith - the very best. Trust in the Lord, Lean not on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5 To you and your family, Our Love and Prayers.
-Clara & Bill Darden (Ahoskie, N.C.)

Words cannot express our admiration for the way our coach lived his life and his family's dedication to his life. There has never been a better example of the true spirit of our university. He'll always be recognized as the "greatest" Pirate for all the attributes he represented. He'll be missed ,but his memory will always be with our Pirate Family.
-The Doyle Family

It seems trite to say life is short, but it seems like Keith was a Western baseball player just the other day. I didn't realize how successful he had been coaching until I learned he had ALS. Having had an uncle die of the disorder, I am particularly sensitive to your families' plight in this time of grief and consolation. Rest assured Keith plays on the All-Star team now at the right hand of the Lord.

May God Bless you all,
-W. Sterling Schermerhorn (ECU '78)

Dear Lynn,
Keith and I went to WCU together and while he succeeded on the baseball field, I played football. He and I were in several classes together, and that's where our friendship began. Throughout the last few years, Keith and I traded emails and each of his replies were read to my kids at the dinner table. They were always mesmerized by his comments. As you know, he affected the lives of many individuals as he demonstrated the essence of attitude, resilience and what an impact God had upon his life. I tried to make it to visitation tonight, but was unable to do so due to traffic heading up I-85 from Atlanta. Tomorrow I will head to Mississippi for my son's World Series. From all indications, you have remained amazingly strong and supportive and I know you are comforted knowing that Keith is in God's arms, and I pray God blesses you and your children. I am so fortunate to have known Keith!
-Kirk Roach

To the LeClair family, I send my deepest condolences to you at this time. I was fortunate to play for your husband and father while at ECU. I can't say enough of how he inspired me as a person. He was truly one in a million. He taught us to be much more than being a baseball player. He was such a leader on and off the field. His example as a Christian man gives me something to strive for in my Christian walk.

I applaud the life he lived. He will truly be missed. He's watching over us all right now. God Bless! *23.
-Todd Speas (ECU 1999-01)

My prayers and thoughts go out to the entire LeClair family. I was fortunate enough to watch Coach LeClair as a player and a coach at Western. May his faith and character be an example for everyone. God Bless.
-Dan White

I never really got to know Coach LeClair but my dad told me much about this great man. I had never seen my dad cry, only little tears I think it is because he doesn't want to show his sadness but when we met Coach LeClair last year my dad presented to him a great gift with pictures of his kids throwing the first pitch the first game tickets and a stadium photo. When my dad gave it to the LeClair family it was just my dad and I and he sobbed you could tell that meeting him and his family meant the world. God Bless Keith LeClair and his Family for putting a smile on not only my dad's face but many others apart of the Pirate nation!
-Katy Fuqua

Never have known Coach LeClair personally, I know alot about him through players and friends. Over these past fews months I remember Chuck Young speaking about Coach Leclair, how he is the model of living. Through hardships and times of pain, Coach LeClair would always be the one to get a joke in, or make you smile, or just brighten your day in many ways. His love for life, family and more importantly his love for God is a mark for all to remember and strive for. You and your family have my continuous prayers and thoughts. I know now a smile and sigh of relief can be given knowing that Coach LeCLair is "up there" smiling down on all of us and dancing his heart out! Much love goes out to the family, friends, and love ones of this awesome Man Of God!
-Craig Harper (ECU Football)

Our deepest sympathies to the LeClair family. Keith was the nicest person anyone could ever have the priviledge to know. Keith was an excellent leader in the game of life. He helped 3 of my brothers and 1 cousin. He will always be remembered. Keith was special to everyone. Our thoughts and prayers remain with you for ever. God Bless Keith LeClair.
Sincerely,
-David and Kathleen Raleigh

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. You'll never know how many lives Coach LeClair touched in his short time on this earth. We know he was a great influence on our son, who admired and respected Coach LeClair so much for his courage, his strength, and his integrity. May God bless you and keep you.
-Ken and Sheila McCullen

As I sat by the computer today listening to Coach Le Clair's funeral service, I was again filled with thankfulness for his role and influence on our lives. I have often thought about ECU and Coach Le Clair in light of Robert Frost's poem The Road Less Traveled. When my son Erik left California to join the Pirate baseball program in 1998, it was the path / program less traveled yet "it has made all the difference".

Keith started out as his baseball coach and became his life coach, mentor, friend and inspiration through the years. We will always have a California connection to ECU and the Le Clair family. My heartfelt condolences and thanks to you Lynn for sharing Keith with the boys.
Most sincerely,
-Jan (Bakich) Stumhoffer

He was a great coach and dedicated leader. His name will never be forgotten and always remembered by athletes from the past and present of ECU.
-Hooks (No. 6 East Carolina Softball 1995-99

Please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many ECU alumni. We are so proud of Keith LeClair, both on and off the baseball field. He will be missed, but so fondly remembered.
Many blessings always,
-Anne and Ben Shepard

Please accept our condolences on the loss of your husband, father and son. I had no idea who Coach LeClair was when Ryan was being recruited by ECU. During the visit Coach spent more time with me than with Ryan and at no point did he build up ECU as the perfect baseball program. I asked him if he had to list one thing that Ryan should consider about ECU baseball what would it be? His answer without hesitation, ,,Me and the relationship that I have with the players. It's not about just baseball. °/°° It struck me as odd that Coach LeClair did not build up the program or his many accomplishments. I spent time talking to Will, Sam, and Davey and by the end of the visit there was no doubt in Ryan's or my mind of where he should go to college. Keith LeClair was ECU baseball. I am so thankful I can say I knew him, that he coached my son, and that he was the reason for coming to ECU. His greatness was surpassed only by inspiration he has given us all. We will miss him. -Walter Norwood

I did not know Coach LeClair personally. My nephew Neal played for him at ECU. He was at my house Friday after the funeral service and told me about the beautiful eulogy that was given at the service. I saw in his face how deeply this man had touched him in his life. Neal talked about old times such as his freshman year on the team and visits with Coach Leclair after his illness was diagnosed. It is truly wonderful to see that this man was able to touch not only Neal in his life but so many others. My deepest sympathy is sent to Coach Leclair's wife and children but I know in my heart that they can live the rest of their lives knowing that their husband and father was truly a great man. -Pam Sears

Like so many others in Walpole I enjoyed my friendship with Keith and was a teammate of his in both baseball and basketball at Fall Mt. We all know of his talent for baseball but in high school he was also a very good basketball player and we enjoyed some exciting games together in the "Den" at FMRHS. I remember a specific game when I was a senior and Keith a Junior where we had to have a win in our last game of the season to make the tournament. It was against our rivals from Stevens High School and the gym was packed on a snowy Friday night in February. With the game tied and only a few seconds on the clock, I thought I would take the winning shot, but I dribbled the ball off my foot, (probably not that uncommon) and it landed in Keith's hands, (probably a good thing for us) and sure enough as he did so many times he nailed the shot to win the game.

Keith was composed in difficult situations as an athlete and certainly in life as well. Despite not seeing each other in the past five years the E-mails he sent to Kerry and I had an impact on our lives. He is and will continue to be a source of strength for us as I know he is for many others.

My families thoughts and prayers are with Keith's family and we are comforted with the Faith that Keith has given us knowing that he is in the hands of God now probably hitting another winning shot.
-Brian Pickering

Thank you so much for welcoming me into your home over the past 5 years. I will certainly miss the conversations Coach and I shared. He impacted my life in so many positive ways and I am a better person from having known him. J.D. and Audrey - Please know that he was very proud of you and loved you deeply. You gave him comfort and happiness throughout his battle and I thank you for taking such good care of the man we all love so much. The future holds so much for the two of you because of the people you are. Lynn-I truly believe that God has a place for a few angels right here on Earth and you are certainly among them. I never worried about Coach during his illness because I knew you were there. Thank you for the comfort you provided to him and those who cared about him. I love you all.
-Ben Sanderson (Former No. 23, ECU '00-'03)

I never personally met Coach LeClair, but as a WCU Catamount fan and booster, I know of his accomplishments both in Cullowhee and Greenville. He is now safely at home, in the loving arms of Almighty God. All Catamounts and Pirates will NEVER forget you Coach. We'll see you again someday. God bless his wife, children, and parents.
-Richard McClellan

Very few people have the decided honor and privilege of observing the Grace of God at work in the life of an individual as I have over the last five years. As a regular supporter of Sportworks, I have seen Keith attend and have Chuck read his words of inspiration. Ministry is every Christians mandate and call but not all answer and allow God to reach others through them. I am glad that Keith answered that call. I am reminded of a story my wife Linda told me when she came back from a women's conference. She said that the speaker asked them why we were not judged immediately after we die and go to heaven. The answer was that the full impact of what we did to touch the lives of others continues reaping dividends until time is no more. I am encouraged that Keith not only has transcended any suffering but also that his great reward is only just beginning and will not end as all those he has touched, touch others who touch others and so on. I pray for you as his presence is no longer physically with you. Life will not be the same. However, that same Grace of God that gave Keith peace amidst the storm is available for you now. The Holy Spirit truly is an equal opportunity empower. My family will continue to keep your family in our prayers. Jesus said that they will know that you are my disciples by the love that you have for one another. God Bless you and keep you and make his face to shine upon you and grant you his peace.
-Boyd Overman your brother in Christ

Our deepest sympathies are extended to you during this difficult time. Coach LeClair was a true inspiration to everyone in the ECU family. His faith in Jesus Christ was his greatest legacy, one that man cannot void. We will always think of Keith's strength & stamina when we see the 'purple & gold' colors flying so boldly. Words cannot comfort you nor lessen your pain. But we serve a mighty God who is the true source of comfort & strength. Rest assured that Keith is resting in the loving arms of our Lord & enjoying all the splendors of Heaven that we've been promised.
May God continue to comfort & bless you in the days ahead. You are in our prayers & thoughts.
-Theresa and Ted Coleman

No. 23 forever, peace to you and your family. Meet you in Omaha Keith!
-Jimmy P. (ECU '80)

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family for their loss. I never got to see him coach or talk to him as I just became a student in 2003, but ever since I set foot at ECU, I knew about Keith LeClair and know so much about him not to even have met him. He is an inspiration to me, and to East Carolina.
-Lewis Gale

You all are in my thoughts and prayers. He did a lot of good things for our school and baseball team.
-Wilmington Pirate

Although I did not know Coach LeClair personally, I am thankful for what he was able to share with ECU and how he represented us. May God be with his family.
-David Brown

We met in 2003 when my husband and your Keith were both having the HUCB transplant in Atlanta with Dr. Ghen. We only met you briefly over the course of a couple of days, but we fondly remember Keith and the strength and faith he showed.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but I know Keith is now rejoicing in Heaven - no more ALS, no more vents, no more pain - only peace and joy with our Lord.

God bless you all, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
-Lesa Frankenberry

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire LeClair Family. Keith was always sincere and caring when we came to visit. His mind was sharp and his memory was clear. During his courageous fight, although difficult and frustrating, Keith would find the strength to ask about his friends and their families. He inspired us and all those who knew him. We were blessed to have known this man of great character and faith. To Lynn, Audrey, JD and the rest of the LeClair family--God Bless.
-Gary, Annette, Kim & David Dudukovich--(Bedford, Pa.)

At first, I was reluctant to post a message here in public about what Keith meant to me. I've communicated that with Keith in the past and felt like it was between me and him. But you know what? I owe Keith LeClair a lot. I owe him for the last-minute help he gave me in a class we shared back at WCU. I owe him for helping me land a job some dozen years later at ECU. I owe him for giving me the perspective it took to leave that same job and devote time to things in life that are far more important. And I, like all the others who have posted and read messages here, will forever be indebted and humbled by his shining example of integrity and courage. And I must join the countless players, coaches, friends and colleagues who share this sentiment: I am a better person because of Keith LeClair.
-Craig Wells (former sports information director at ECU and WCU)

Obviously, by all of the heart-warming comments expressed in this website, Keith has made an impact on so many lives. The only thing that I can add is what he meant to me. As a player for Keith during his first two years as Head Coach at WCU, he taught me the importance of respect. To this day, I still remember the conversation that he and I had. I often use this conversation with some of my employees when I'm trying to express my concerns with them. What he taught me, I have taken far beyond the playing field.

I wish the best for the LeClair family, my thoughts are directed toward your family.
-Scott Lyman (Former WCU player 1989-93)

I have had the great pleasure of being Keith's championship teammate, roommate, and friend. One of my fondest moments was having the opportunity to be apart of his grandest day, the day he married you, Lynn. I was truly honored to be apart of your special day.

I have two young children and pray each night that they may turn out to be half the person Keith was. He has always been an inspiration to me the way he played the game, coached the game, and lived his life. The relationship we had was something I will cherish forever. He knew things about me that no one else knew.

I hate so badly that I was unable to attend the funeral. We happened to be on vacation that week. I know it was a big day for Keith as now he is finally at home.

Lynn, Please know that I will continue to pray for you and your family. Keith, may you rest in peace.

Your friend forever,
-Jeff "Sparky" Stevens

My heart goes out to the LeClair family. I graduated from ECU in 1969, and have lived in Arizona since 1972, so rarely do I run into any Pirates. I've become aware of Keith and his illness only recently and read of his passing in our local newspaper. My husband was diagnosed with ALS 11 months ago...so we are learning to live with this new reality. You are all in my prayers.
-Marty Almon Rozelle

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the children. God Bless!
-The Jackson Family (ODU 1999-2001)

Our thoughts and prayer's are with you, at this time of loss. Keith was a wonderful friend to me in school. Keith was also a fellow athlete in school. Keith and I grew up playing ball together. Keith always brought out the best in everyone even in his younger years. Keith will always be remembered and dearly missed. We would like to say something special to Lynn, we hope someday to get a chance to meet you, you are a amazing and loving person, to stand by and support and love your husband throughout all that your family has been through. God Bless you and the kids.
Sincerely,
-Todd & Judy Houghton (Walpole, N.H.)

I'm an old Walpole schoolmate of Keith's. My sister, LeeAnne, told me of his passing. Keith was one of those people that quietly went about his life, not trying to stand out but doing so anyway. That's the kind of person I think we'd all like to be. Clearly, he went on to live the rest of his shamefully short life in the same way and many others have benefitted from his subtle leadership. None of us can hope to do more than he did. Thank you for making his life possible.
-Ellen Fenner

I had the privilege of attending a father-son camp with my brother and Dad while Keith was still coaching, and it was the most enjoyable camp I have ever attended. He was truly a gift to everyone around him, and to the Greenville community, and I will always remember him.
-Michael McCall

My condolences to your entire family. I did not know your husband but came upon a website in his honor while researhing information on ALS. I was touched to learn of his compassion for others. He obviously was a remarkable man touching so many lives. I understand he was quite a family man who loved his wife dearly and adored his children as much as a father could. The most incredible information I learned of your husband was that he was a christian man, knowing that assures us that he is now with our Maker. Mrs. LeClair, please know that I along with thousands of others are working hard every day to either find a cure, raise research money or raise awareness for ALS. We will not stop until there is a cure. We love you, your childern, Keith's parents, Any Siblings, and Inlaws in Christ. May God comfort you now and in the coming years.
-Becky Coney

I would like to send my deepest regards to the LeClair family. I had a wonderful time watching him coach the Pirates to 2 successful seasons in both '01 and '02.
God Bless You,
-Hunter E. Brantley (ECU 2004)

Best Wishes. Know that all things work together for the good of them that Love God, and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8). God Bless You all, and continue to shine upon you. Children continue to do whats right and what he has taught you all, and take care of your mother.
-John Brown

I would like to personally extend my thoughts, prayers, comfort and support on the loss of a great man, father and as well as overall great person and coach in college baseball. He was and always shall be and inspiration to all who got that chance to know him. I was one of the fortunate ones whom got the chance to meet him and am proud of everything he stood for on and off the field throughout his life. He is a great person and his spirit will continue to be with me always.
Sincerely,
-Trey Marabella - UAB Baseball Bat/Ball Boy

It was a pleasure and blessing to know Keith. We first met when he had just begun his coaching career. I had invited this young coach to speak to the Georgia Dugout Club Coaches Clinic in Atlanta. He was outstanding as a guest speaker and it was easy to see he would be successful in his profession. His love of the game was only surpassed by his love for the players he coached. The family and friends that he left behind grieve because they have lost a loved one, but he is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord in a new and healthy body. Thanks for sharing Keith with me when I had the pleasure of being around him at the ball park. May the Lord bless your family during this Christmas season!
-Steve Smith - New York Mets/Scout
