WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -Freshman Anthony Gurley came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points and help Wake Forest to an 81-65 win over East Carolina on Monday.

Freshman Ishmael Smith also scored 15 points - two off his career best - for the Demon Deacons (8-5), who shot 57.1 percent from the field and hit a season-best 12 3-pointers in running their record against the Pirates to 5-0.

Kyle Visser added 14 points and freshman L.D. Williams recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-best 10 rebounds for Wake Forest, which won for the third time in its last four games.

Sam Hinnant scored 13 points and James Dillard and Darrell Jenkins added 12 each for East Carolina (4-8), which suffered its seventh consecutive loss.

Gurley and Williams each had eight points in the first half for the Demon Deacons, who overcame an early deficit against the Pirates. East Carolina led 7-4 with 15:15 left, but Wake Forest rallied to lead 40-30 at the break.

The Demon Deacons stretched their lead to 20 points twice in the second half, and took their biggest lead - 25 points - when Chas McFarland's tip-in with 5:43 remaining put Wake Forest up 73-48.

East Carolina managed to cut into the Demon Deacons' lead in the final three minutes, pulling within 12 points twice, the last time at 77-65 on a pair of Cory Farmer free throws with 1:07 left.


 

 

But Smith hit a pair of free throws, then drove in for a layup with 30 seconds remaining for the final margin.
