GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Cameron Moore scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead UAB over East Carolina 61-57 on Saturday, earning its third straight win and six in its last seven.
Preston Purifoy added 15 points for the Blazers (13-14, 8-6 Conference USA), who scored 13 points off 15 offensive rebounds and won the battle of the boards by 11, 37-26. UAB had five players with two or more offensive rebounds.
Junior Shamarr Bowden scored a career-high 27 points, knocking down 7-of-11 3-pointers to lead the Pirates (12-15, 3-11 C-USA). Darrius Morrow and Robert Sampson added 10 points apiece in ECU's fifth consecutive defeat.
The Blazers led all but 51 seconds after rushing out to a 7-1 lead in the first 3:55 as the Pirates turned it over on three of their first four possessions. After the Pirates had gotten within two, 12-10, UAB scored nine unanswered to take its largest lead of the game with 8:50 left in the first half.
Bowden them made three straight 3s to bring ECU within four and then sank his fifth of the first half just before the halftime buzzer to pull the Pirates within three at intermission, 31-28.
The Blazers scored the first six points of the second half and pushed their lead back to double digits with 13:29 to play, 47-37.
Two free throws from Miguel Paul ignited a 10-0 spurt by ECU to tied the game at 47. Paul sank a 3 from the top of the key to bring the Pirates within three before Sampson made his first of two consecutive 3s to tie the game.
Following a basket from Purifoy, Sampson gave ECU its only lead of the game, 50-49, with another 3 from the left of the key.
UAB answered with a 10-0 run of its own and led by nine with 5:50 to play, capped by a 3-pointer from Quincy Taylor. ECU then scored seven straight to get within two, 59-57, with 2:08 to play.
The Pirates launched a trio of 3-pointers in the final two minutes, any of which would've given them the lead, but couldn't get one to fall.
Purifoy made both his free throws with 11 seconds to play to seal the Blazers' sixth win over ECU on the Pirates' home court in six meetings.
