HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Ryan Taylor converted a three-point play with 10 seconds to go to lift Marshall over East Carolina, 64-61, Sunday at the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd (10-20, 4-11 Conference USA) scored the last 10 points of the game while holding the Pirates (16-14, 5-10) scoreless for the final 4:32.

The loss eliminated ECU from the possibility of receiving a first round bye in the 2014 Conference USA Championships, which begin March 11 in El Paso, Texas.

The Pirates' final points of the game came on a 3-pointer from Caleb White, giving ECU a 61-54 advantage. On the ensuing possession Kareem Canty answered with a 3-pointer, dropping the Pirates' lead back to four.

Shawn Smith converted a layup to make it 61-59 with 2:34 to lead up to Taylor's winning play which made it 62-61. Canty scored two more on a pair throws after a missed 3-pointer by East Carolina's Akeem Richmond.

White scored 23 points to lead ECU with Richmond adding 15 and Antonio Robinson 10. The Pirates trailed 52-51 with 10 minutes to go, but rallied in front with a 10-2 run, capped by White's 3-pointer at 61-54.

East Carolina came out of the gates slowly in both halves. The Pirates fell behind 20-7 in the first nine minutes, only to outscore the Herd 34-10 the remainder of the half for a 41-30 halftime lead.

The Pirates shot 60.9 percent from the field in the opening period, making 12 of their final 15 shots of the half after starting 2 of 8. Marshall shot a mere 34.5-percent before halftime, but the role were reversed in the second half.

The Herd opened the second half by scoring the first 16 points to take a 46-41 lead in just over five minutes as ECU started the frame 0 of 7 from the floor before Prince Williams, who finished with a career-high 10 rebounds and nine assists, got the Pirates on the board at the 6:04 mark.

White gave East Carolina the lead back at 53-52 with 9:18 to play, eventually stretching its lead back to seven.

Taylor scored the game-winning points and finished with 15. Chris Thomas scored 17 to lead the Herd. Canty added 11 points and Smith 10.
