March 10, 2011
East Carolina advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship for the first time in its history. It's the first time the Pirates have reached the semifinals of a conference tournament since reaching the final four of the 1996 CAA Tournament.
ECU has won two games in a conference tournament for the first time since winning three games during the 1993 CAA Tournament.
The Pirates posted their 18th win of the season, their most since 1994-95 when they also won 18 games. It's just the sixth time in school history that they've won 18 games in a season.
The victory ended the Pirates' seven-game losing streak to UAB. The ECU Senior Class of 2011 has now beaten every team in Conference USA except Tulsa.
It's the third time this season that East Carolina has beaten a 20-win team and the second time it has beaten a team with a top 35 RPI. Memphis was 33rd in the RPI when ECU defeated the Tigers on March 2.
The Pirates played their first overtime game of the season and first since losing at home to George Washington on Dec. 22, 2009.
ECU shot a season-high 48 free throws. It was the second time this season that the Pirates have been to the charity stripe over 40 times. They had 45 free throw attempts against UTEP. Their 33 made free throws was the second-most they made in a game this season, sinking 35 against the Miners.
East Carolina improved to 10-1 this season when holding a team to under 40 percent shooting for the field.
Junior Darrius Morrow posted his second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds, one shy of his career-high for rebounds. It was his third double-double of the season and 10th of his career.
Morrow tied his career-high with five blocked shots.
Sophomore Corvonn Gaines scored a career-high 14 points, besting his previous top mark of 13 set twice during the season.
Gainees recorded his 51st steal of the season to become the sixth player at ECU to register 50 steals in a season.
Senior Jontae Sherrod recorded his ninth 20-point game of the season. ECU is 7-0 against Conference USA foes when he scores 20 or more.
Sherrod moved into fourth on the school's single-season 3-point field goals made list with 68.
Senior Jamar Abrams grabbed seven rebounds to become the 22nd player in school history with 500 boards. He has exactly 500 rebounds for his career.
