EL PASO, Texas - Julian Washburn scored 20 points as No. 5 seed UTEP got a 77-68 win over 12th-seeded East Carolina in the Conference USA second round Wednesday night.

UTEP (23-9) will play No. 4 seed Southern Mississippi (26-5) in the quarterfinals Thursday, while the Pirates await a potential postseason invitation.

The Miners scored the first five points, East Carolina (17-16) scored the next five and UTEP took it from there, scoring 19 of the game's next 20 points to build a 24-6 lead with Washburn dropping in 13 points.

The Miners led 42-26 at the break and never allowed the Pirates to get closer than 13 points until the final minute.

John Bohannon did not miss a shot on 6-of-6 shooting from the field and made three free throws, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Vince Hunter scored 12 points and Matt Willms added 11 for the Miners, who now have won three-straight.

Prince Williams, Paris Roberts-Campbell and Akeem Richmond each scored 14 points to lead East Carolina. Williams dished out five assists and Caleb White added 13 points for the Pirates.

Washburn blanketed Richmond all night and the Miner defense limited him to a season-low six 3-point attempts, one night after launching an ECU record 19 3s. Richmond didn't make his first 3-pointer until 12 minutes had past and his second and third didn't come until the game's final three minutes.

Nevertheless, Richmond moved up to seventh on the NCAA's all-time 3-pointers made list with 414, tying former Davidson All-America guard Stephen Curry for the spot. He also became the fourth player in school history to score 600 points in a season, bringing his yearly total to 606.
