SETTING THE SCENE
Coming off its worst defeat of the season, East Carolina will look to right the ship and record its first Conference USA win Saturday afternoon as its faces UAB at Bartow Arena in Birmingham.
The Pirates are 0-6 in Conference USA, while the Blazers have won back-to-back conference games to even up their ledger at 3-3.
UAB is the top rebounding team in the league averaging 47.0 boards per game. It also has the highest rebounding margin in the conference at +11.1.
ECU senior Akeem Richmond (18.4 ppg) and UAB junior Chad Frazier (18.2) rank one and three in the league in scoring.
WILL LIGHTENING STRIKE AGAIN
East Carolina lost its first six Conference USA games of 2012 before earning their first win at UAB, 73-66, on Jan. 28.
The Pirates have more road wins at UAB, three, than at any other Conference USA school besides Rice, where they also have three victories. ECU has won each of the last two meetings at Bartow Arena and owns a 3-6 record on the Blazers' home floor.
THREE-POINT THINGS TO WATCH FOR
Richmond is two made 3s from becoming just the third player in C-USA history to make 100 3-pointers in multiple seasons. Houston's Robert McKiver (145, 2007-08; 116, 2006-07) and UAB's Robert Vaden (142, 2007-08; 112, 2008-09) were the others. Richmond made 108 last season.
Should Richmond make two 3-pointers he would be in the first player in NCAA Division I to make 100 3s this season.
UAB leads the all-time series, 12-5. However, East Carolina has won four of the last five meetings.
ECU played its first-ever Conference USA road game at UAB on Jan. 8, 2002. The Blazers posted a 63-54 victory.
During the 12-year series, East Carolina has had four head coaches (Bill Herrion, Ricky Stokes, Mack McCarthy, Jeff Lebo) and UAB has had four (Murray Bartow, Mike Anderson, Mike Davis, Jerrod Haase).
The most points ECU has ever in a Conference USA game came last season against the Blazers when the poured in 91 at Bartow Arena.
ECU will return home Feb. 6 and 8 to face UTEP and UTSA. The Feb. 6 game against UTEP is scheduled for a 9 p.m. tip-off and will be televised on Fox Sports 1. It'll be the Pirates' final C-USA meeting with the Miners and first-ever game against the Road Runners.
Thursday night's game against UTEP has been designated a "Black Out." Fnas are encouraged to wear their black ECU gear as the team will be donning its black uniforms. First 1,000 students also receive a FREE black headband courtesy of Coca-Cola.
