ECU Hits The Hardwood For First Practice

Oct. 14, 2011

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's basketball team held its first official practice of the 2011-12 season Friday evening inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum under the direction of second-year head coach Jeff Lebo.

"I thought everything went well tonight," Lebo said. "We had good energy and good leadership. It's nice to have some veterans on the team that the new guys can watch and learn from.

"We had to do some teaching and slow things down, but we do have four newcomers that have Division I experience so this wasn't a shock to them."

Among the returning veterans are a trio of starters led by preseason All-Conference USA senior forward Darrius Morrow along with juniors Corvonn Gaines and Erin Straughn, each of whom started 33 of 34 games last season. Sophomores Darius Morales, Robert Sampson and Petar Torlak also return this season.

East Carolina also welcomes four transfers in juniors Shamarr Bowden, Maurice Kemp and Miguel Paul as well as senior Austin Steed. Paul sat out the 2010-11 season as Division I transfer from Missouri, while Steed joins the Pirates after playing three years at South Carolina. Bowden and Kemp also played at the Division I level as freshmen before transferring to junior college for their sophomore season. Other new faces on the team include freshmen Paris Roberts-Campbell and Yasin Kolo.

Fans will have the chance to "Meet The Pirates," on Saturday, Oct. 15. The event will include team introductions and skills competitions followed by an autograph session with the players and coaches. The festivities will also include with a slam dunk inflatable for kids and two novelty stations where fans can make koozies and street signs. ARAMARK concessions and a Dowdy Student Stores souvenir booth will also be open. Admission is free.

ECU tips off the regular season on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. against Milligan College inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
