Gold Downs Purple in Pirate Preview Scrimmage

GREENVILLE, N.C. The East Carolina men's basketball team made its first public appearance of the 2004-05 season Thursday, as the Gold team defeated the Purple, 22-17, in an abbreviated intrasquad scrimmage inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum as a part of the Pirate Preview. Both students and community members were on hand for the activities, which included contests for students along with the 16-minute scrimmage.

Freshman guard Tom Hammonds, Jr. led the way for the Gold team with nine points, drilling 4-of-7 shots. Senior Moussa Badiane chipped in six points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and swatted a pair of shots. Sophomore Japhet McNeil dished out a game-high three assists and recorded two steals.

For the Purple team, sophomore guard Mike Cook scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds. Junior Corey Rouse pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds as the Purple squad outrebound the Gold, 15-10.

Among the other activities during the evening was a slam-dunk contest. Freshman Jonathan Hart's first dunk received the loudest ovation of the evening as the tossed the ball off the shot clock and put it down. However, fellow freshman Marvin Kilgore won the contest with a pair of thunderous jams.

The Pirates will hold their annual Purple-Gold scrimmage on Saturday, October 30 prior to the ECU-Army football game. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m. inside the coliseum. The scrimmage is open and free to both students and the general public.
