After cruising to a 101-45 win over NAIA Division II member Milligan College in its season-opener, East Carolina is expecting to face a much stiffer challenge Monday night as it travels to Buies Creek to face Campbell in its first road test of the season.
Six players, five of which were making their ECU debut, scored double figures on opening night led by Missouri transfer Miguel Paul, who dropped in a game-high 19 points. Newcomers Maurice Kemp (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Austin Steed (11 points, 13 rebounds) each posted a double-double donning the purple and gold for the first time. Junior college transfer Shamarr Bowden and freshman Paris Roberts-Campbell also netted double figures with 11 and 12 points respectively.
The Pirates shot a blistering 59.1 percent from behind the arc (13-22). Roberts-Campbell made 4-of-5 from 3-point range, while Bowden was a perfect 3-of-3. ECU forced 24 turnovers which translated into 33 points and scored 31 second chance points.
Campbell opened the season with an 82-68 win over Houston Baptist Friday night. Trey Freeman (22) and Eric Griffin (21) combined for 43 points. Freeman made 7-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the line in his collegiate debut. The Camels shot a Gore Arena record 60.9 percent from the floor and knocked down 24-of-31 (.774) from the foul line.
ECU responded with a 76-63 victory over Campbell inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum last season. Departed senior Jontae Sherrod led all scorers with 21 points, while Erin Straughn added 12 and Corvonn Gaines netted 11. The Pirates sank 11 3-pointers in the games as they led for the game's final 23 minutes.
