ECU Looks To Match Best Start in School History

    GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina's men's basketball team will look to match its best start in school history on Saturday night as it hosts NCAA Division II opponent Mount Olive College in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum at 7 p.m.

    The game will be aired across the 26-station Pirate Sports Network, including WGPM (94.3 FM) and WCZI (98.3 FM) in Greenville. There is no television scheduled for this game.

    The Pirates enter the game sporting a 6-0 record for the first time since 1954 and will attempt to tie the mark for most consecutive wins to start a season against the Trojans. The record of seven was set during the 1953-54 campaign.

    ECU outscored Virginia Tech 47-24 in the second half to rally from a 13- point deficit and post a 16-point victory over the Hokies Monday night, 76-60. Four players scored in double figures led by freshman Belton Rivers' career-high 18 points. Junior college transfer Derrick Wiley also added 17 points in the winning effort.

    Mount Olive also brings an unblemished record into the game, 5-0. The Trojans have won each of their first five games by an average of 12.8 points Most recently, the Trojans defeated NC Central, 96-85, on December 7. Marcus West had 22 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.

    Saturday's game will be the first ever meeting between East Carolina and Mount Olive College.

    On the Line For the Pirates

  • East Carolina looks to tie the school record for most consecutive wins to start a season, seven. The only other time in school history that ECU started 7-0 was 1953-53.
  • The Pirates have won eight consecutive games in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum dating back to last season. ECU is 23-8 at home since the start of the 2000-01 season.
  • ECU has won 12 consecutive games against non-Division I opponents.
  • East Carolina has held each of its first six opponents to less than 40 percent shooting. The highest field goal percentage allowed by ECU this season is 39.7 by Virginia Tech.
  • The Pirates have held each of their last 10 opponents to under 70 points, dating back to last season.
  • East Carolina has won 11 consecutive non-Conference USA games overall and eight consecutive non-conference games in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
