GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Decked out its gold uniforms, East Carolina looked a lot like the Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s, running up and down the floor and getting easy transition baskets as it defeated Hampton, 77-53, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Tuesday night.

ECU (6-1) forced Hampton into 27 turnovers and converted those miscues into 32 points, including 16 fast break points. The ECU Pirates shot 54.5 percent from the floor during the second half and finished the game 31-of-64 from the field (48.4 percent).

"This is one of the best games we've played in the five years that I've been coaching here," said Pirate head coach Bill Herrion. "Our intensity and energy was tremendous tonight. We want to run on miss shots and turnovers, and tonight we were able to get a lot of dunks and easy baskets in transition."

With ECU down four less than seven minutes into the game, senior Erroyl Bing's fast break dunk ignited a 26-10 run over the final 12:13 of the first half to push ECU to a 35-23 halftime lead.

The start of the second half was just a continuation of the end of the first half. A turnaround jumper by senior Derrick Wiley, three-pointers from Japhet McNeil and Bing, and another Bing dunk in transition ballooned the ECU lead to 21 points, 6:06 into the half. The Pirates out scored Hampton (3-8) 35-11 during a 16-minute stretch, holding Hampton to just three field goals during that stretch and just seven during the entire half. ECU led by as many as 26 during the contest.

East Carolina used its transition offense to perfection as it scored on a combined 13 dunks and lay ups during the game.

Wiley led four ECU players in double figures as he netted a team-high 15 points. Bing added 13 points to go along with eight rebounds. Senior Gabriel Mikulas also grabbed eight boards in addition to scoring 11 points as did sophomore Belton Rivers.

Frank Russell was the lone Hampton player to reach double figures scoring a game-high 17 points. ECU held Hampton's leading scorer Devin Green to a mere six points.

East Carolina returns to action Saturday against Virginia Tech at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start and will be televised locally on WITN-TV 7.
