Head Football Coach Ruffin McNeill Discusses The Upcoming Appalachian State Game

A strong, mobile and fundamentally-sound defender who appears to have regained developmental momentum and is back on a full-speed course after suffering a serious ankle injury during a contest in November of 2011 ... Wrapped up spring drills listed as the top reserve at the "will" outside linebacking slot behind Maurice Falls, but is also expected to battle returning starter Derrell Johnson for top status during the season ... Was on the proverbial fast track, enjoying a quicker rise on defensive two-deep than any other member of the linebacking corps during his first active season before the injury occurred ... Was held to restricted contact during the 2012 spring and a return to normalcy during the fall progressed slower than anticipated ... Opened the 2013 spring scrimmage season with five tackles, three resulting in lost yardage, on April 6 ... Tacked on a sack (-7 yards) during the second tilt a week later before finishing with two stops and a pass breakup during the Purple-Gold Game (April 20) ... Continues to take full advantage of time in the strength and conditioning program, producing a back squat of 485 pounds, a power clean of 333, a push jerk of 295, a vertical leap of 31" and a pro shuttle time of 4.1 during spring testing, perhaps serving as a testament of the recovery process ... A coach's son who exhibits strong preparation habits and displays plenty of leadership skills.

2012: Played in nine games in a reserve and special teams role ... Tallied five total stops (one solo), four on defense against the rush and one on kickoff coverage ... First tackle of the season came at UCF (solo) in the fourth quarter ... Logged a season-best two hits vs. UL-Lafayette in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl ... 2011: Consistently improved throughout the course of initial season on the active roster, rising from special teams' member, to reserve linebacker to starter at one of the outside positions ... Appeared in 11 games and was in the starting lineup his final three contests of the year - vs. Southern Miss, UTEP and UCF ... Missed the finale at Marshall after suffering a season-ending left ankle injury against UCF ... Booked 29 tackles with 11 solo hits and 18 assists ... Tallied a squad fourth-best five stops for lost yardage, just a half tackle behind the trio of leaders ... Added a pair of sacks and was one of just four Pirates with two or more quarterback drops ... 23 of season's 29 hits were on rushing plays ... Tallied 27 hits during Conference USA games and only two, at Navy, in non-league action ... Registered five hits through the first six games of the year, but came on strong with 24 during final five ... Tied with Michael Brooks for the most TFL during C-USA contests with five ... Ended the game at UTEP with a career-high 10 tackles, including six solo hits as well as four fourth-quarter stops ... One of six Pirates to turn in double-digit stops in a contest ... Also in the fourth frame, jarred the ball loose from Mike Edwards for the first forced fumble of Geary's career ... Stopped the Miners' Leilyon Myers for a five-yard loss in the first quarter ... Experienced first extensive action on defense at Houston after playing mainly on special teams through the first four games ...
