Sharp Passing Effort, Rush Defense Dominates Second Scrimmage

Expected to contend for a starting role for the second-straight campaign, likely at the “rush” outside linebacking position in the Pirates’ tweaked 3-4 scheme … Work ethic and assignment-sound approach continues to fuel rapid development after earning initial roster slot as a walk-on in the fall of 2013 … Made most of early opportunity by impressing coaching staff as an award-winning scout team performer before contributing significantly to the defensive unit as a top reserve in 2014 and ultimately winning starting job during sophomore season in 2015 … Also handled top-tier special teams role as a redshirt freshman to earn additional reps … Efforts and dedication were rewarded by “promotion” to full-scholarship status during the summer of 2015 … In all, has appeared in 24 career games (nine starts) and recorded 59 tackles (22 solo) … Has booked at least one stop in 19 contests and tallied multiple tackles on 14 occasions (six in 2014, 8 in 2015) … Opened spring scrimmage schedule with three hits on April 9 … Added another stop during the Purple-Gold Game on April 16 … Stellar work in strength and conditioning program earned “Iron Pirate” rating at the conclusion of spring testing … Owns some of the top strength numbers among all linebackers, recording lifts of 365 pounds (bench), 510 (squat), 300 (push jerk) and 275 (power clean) … Turned in a 4.34 pro shuttle clip and possesses one of the top three-cone drill times among unit at 7.0.
