GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina cleared its second mid-week hurdle of the spring, continuing its workout schedule with a two-hour outing Wednesday afternoon at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

Fifth-year head coach Ruffin McNeill ordered a return to shells for the practice, which was carried out in unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid-80s, after the completion of the program's first scrimmage two days earlier.

McNeill and his staff finished video evaluations of Monday's contest and their thoughts remained consistent with what they observed during live action.

"I thought there were a lot of positives on both sides of the ball," McNeill said. "It was good to see things work in unison on offense, and defensively, I thought we were in the right places. It seems like we have a lot of new guys back there, but the truth of the matter is that they've played a lot of snaps already and it looked like it."

Senior inside linebacker Brandon Williams and sophomore safety Terrell Richardson each recorded interceptions during the extended team period near the end of practice Wednesday to key the defense, while offensively, quarterbacks Shane Carden and Kurt Benkert combined on 12-of-22 passing for 122 yards and a score.

Carden, who was 8-of-14 for 96 yards and a touchdown, tossed the longest completion of the day when he connected with sophomore inside receiver Jimmy Williams for a 34-yarder. Benkert was successful on 4-of-8 throws for 26 yards.

East Carolina will return to work Friday before closing its second full week of action with another scrimmage Saturday.

NOTES: Additional medical evaluations have determined that redshirt freshman tight end Darren Dowdell (left leg) and senior nose tackle Terry Williams (right ankle) will miss the remainder of spring drills because of injuries ... Williams went down late during Monday's scrimmage ... Sophomore defensive back DaShaun Amos (right ankle) was kept out another day but is hopeful for a return to active status later this week ... Wednesday's practice was the Pirates' seventh overall and fifth in pads.

Next Workout: Friday, April 4 (3:30-5:45 p.m.)
Remaining Workouts: April 5 (scrimmage), April 7, April 9, April 11 and April 12 (Purple-Gold Game, 2:30 p.m.)
