GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina completed its eighth workout of the spring with a shells-only outing Friday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Complex. The two-hour practice also served as a preparation session for the Pirates' second intrasquad scrimmage scheduled for late Saturday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Similar to Monday's contest, ECU's first of the spring, head coach Ruffin McNeill and staff will oversee a 50-to-60-play script that should provide another live, full-pad evaluation opportunity for personnel on all three levels of ECU's current depth chart.

"We had a very competitive day overall and I'm expecting the same during the scrimmage," McNeill said. "The tempo needs to be quick and snappy, and I know we'll attack it like we've done all spring. I thought the offense moved the ball pretty well today and the defense did some good things as well. On the other hand, I didn't think we had our best special teams effort, but that's something we've already addressed."

As McNeill indicated, the Pirate offense enjoyed sustained drives during Friday's 20-minute team period. Redshirt freshman quarterback Kurt Benkert perhaps turned in his best numbers of the spring with an 11-of-12, 104-yard performance that included a 23-yard scoring pass to sophomore Jimmy Williams. Senior Shane Carden was six-of-10 for 75 yards and also contributed a touchdown throw by finding sophomore Davon Grayson with a 13-yarder. Senior Justin Hardy topped all pass catchers with four receptions for 51 yards during the segment.

Junior Zeek Bigger, seniors Desi Brown and Brandon Williams each registered tackles for lost yardage, while senior Maurice Falls and junior Johnathon White combined on a sack to lead the defense.

After Saturday's game, the Pirates will have just three more weekday afternoon workouts remaining before the playing of the Purple-Gold Game on April 12.

NOTES: Approximately 130 coaches representing a combined 45 high school programs in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Florida arrived on campus Thursday night to participate in ECU's annual three-day coaching clinic, which feature offensive, defensive, special teams and strength/speed presentations by all members of the Pirate staff ... In addition, former Pirate (1995-96) and current Oakland Raiders Defensive Line Coach Terrell Williams, along with Denver Broncos Offensive Line Coach Dave Magazu, served as guest speakers during the instructional sessions ... After observing Friday's practice, the prep coaches will also be in attendance during the scrimmage ... Sophomore DB DaShaun Amos (right ankle) will be held out of contact work Saturday for precautionary reasons, joining senior NT Terry Williams (right ankle) and freshman TE Darren Dowdell (left leg) on the sidelines during the scrimmage.

Next Workout: Saturday, April 5 (10:30 am-12 noon)
Remaining Workouts: April 7, April 9, April 11 and April 12 (Purple-Gold Game, 2:30 p.m.)
