Spring Football Notebook No. 11
April 6, 2012
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina resumed its spring practice schedule with a shells-only workout Friday morning inside the Cliff Moore Complex. The shortened 90-minute outing also put the finishing touches on preparation efforts for the Pirates' second intra-squad scrimmage slated for Saturday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Third-year head coach Ruffin McNeill is looking forward to another live, full-pad evaluation opportunity during Saturday's contest, which is tentatively scripted for 55 to 60 plays - a similar amount of snaps that last week's action produced.
"I'm anxious to see the continued development of this team," McNeill said. "I expect some of our younger guys to get extra reps in this particular scrimmage and have a chance to show what they can do, plus it'll be another day of competition for our quarterbacks and our secondary, which has turned into a real battle.
"Guys are challenging each other out there, but also providing plenty of encouragement at the same time. From my standpoint, I can't ask for anything better."
Extended meeting sessions allowed McNeill to trim 30 minutes off Friday's on-field schedule in an effort to ensure freshness for the scrimmage, which will serve as ECU's 12th practice day of the spring. The Pirates went through abbreviated individual segments but still spent considerable time in special teams, skeleton and team periods.
NOTES: With sophomore QB Shane Carden (right index finger) sidelined for the rest of the spring, senior Brad Wornick, junior Rio Johnson and redshirt freshman Cody Keith combined on a 10-of-17, 74-yard passing performance during the team-on-team drill ... Included as one of Johnson's four completions was a 17-yarder to junior IWR Derrick Harris ... Defensively, junior DE Justin Dixon, junior OLB Derrell Johnson and redshirt freshman DE Johnathon White each booked sacks ... Another redshirt freshman, CB Rocco Scarfone, netted an interception deep inside the redzone to thwart a scoring opportunity ... Senior OLB Chris Baker and redshirt freshman OL Chaz Lowery are both questionable for Saturday's scrimmage because of illness ... In addition to Carden, junior FS Damon Magazu (lower back), redshirt freshman IWR Donte Sumpter (right knee) and junior NT Leroy Vick (concussion) will not play ... Following the contest, the Pirates will have just two more weekday afternoon sessions remaining before completing its workout schedule with the playing of the Purple-Gold Game April 14.
