Spring Football Notebook No. 9

GREENVILLE, N.C. - After conducting its first official intra-squad scrimmage of the spring Saturday, East Carolina returned to Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Monday afternoon and continued an up-tempo pace with a 90-minute workout in shells.
Fourth-year head coach Ruffin McNeill and his staff completed full game-tape evaluations earlier in the day and their impressions of the content remained pretty consistent with their initial in-person observations Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
"I thought there were a lot of positives that we can build on from Saturday," McNeill said. "There were explosive plays on both sides of the ball and the tempo was good, which is something that we've emphasized since we started the spring. I was also impressed with our sideline organization and management as well, especially being out in the stadium the first time.
"On the other hand, we've got to correct the penalties. As I've said before, our goal is to always be in the max to two range, and we didn't even come close to that."
Monday's session was ECU's ninth of the spring period, leaving just six more remaining practices, including a second Saturday morning scrimmage later this week and the playing of the Purple-Gold Game April 20.
Although in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, and void of hard contact for the duration of the workout Monday, the Pirates' weekday period-by-period schedule didn't change from McNeill's established norm this spring. East Carolina spent its final 45 minutes engaged in three segments that included special teams, skeleton drills and an 11-on-11 team period.
"We fought through somewhat of a sluggish start, but had a spirited finish beginning with skelly and extending into the team period," McNeill added. "There's only six more days left and we need to take advantage of each one of those."
NOTES: Additional medical evaluations determined that OL Chaz Lowery will miss the remainder of the spring after suffering a left knee injury during Friday's practice ... DE Chrishon Rose (left shoulder), ILB Jeremy Grove (left shoulder) and DE Terrell Stanley (left knee) returned to work Monday after sitting out Saturday's scrimmage ... A stop of a drive that reached the three-yard line and junior safety Lamar Ivey's interception off a tipped pass highlighted the defensive effort during the team segment, while Quataye Smyre (25 yards) and Justin Hardy's (23) three-catch effort topped the offense ... Shane Carden completed eight-of-12 passes for 61 yards to lead all quarterbacks.
