Spring Football Notebook No. 10
April 10, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina continued to progress through its spring football practice schedule Wednesday afternoon with another two-hour session in full gear. The workout, conducted on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Complex, was the Pirates' 10th overall and eighth in pads.
Wednesday's practice, carried out in unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid-80s, also started preparation efforts for ECU's second intra-squad scrimmage of the spring, which is scheduled for Saturday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
"We got off to somewhat of a slow start, but I thought we bounced back and had some periods where the productivity was where it needed to be," head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "As we head toward Saturday, I'm looking forward to seeing how much we've developed from one scrimmage to another, especially with guys doing different jobs with position changes and new roles. We've got to continue making adjustments in the next five days. The bottom line is still the focus on improving our execution and building depth."
The majority of the workout followed a script consistent with others this spring as both the offense and defense closed the outing with a 26-minute team period that followed special teams work that covered field goals and kickoff returns. Sophomore Cody Keith turned in a six-of-six, 64-yard passing performance and highlighted the team segment with 33-yard scoring toss to junior inside receiver Justin Hardy. Defensively, senior strong safety Chip Thompson netted a sack off a blitz and redshirt freshman tackle Frederick Presley recorded a pair of batted passes.
NOTES: Similar to last spring, junior Desi Brown has experienced considerable action at the "buck" inside linebacking position during drills ... In addition to special teams assignments, Brown has been a safety in the Pirates' defensive scheme the last two seasons ... He joins senior Michael Dobson (RB to DB) and sophomore Terrell Stanley (DT to DE) as defenders who played other positions last fall ... Senior OWR Brandon Weymann, who earned a spot on the Pirate roster as a walk-on in the spring of 2011, has informed McNeill of his decision to leave the program.
