GREENVILLE, N.C. - Former East Carolina outside receiver Reese Wiggins has signed a rookie free agent contract with the New England Patriots according to a release by the National Football League organization late Tuesday.
Wiggins recently completed his four-year, 36-game collegiate playing career with 80 receptions for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns. He helped the Pirates to a pair of bowl game appearances and a combined 18-8 record as a starter during his junior and senior campaigns.
An All-Conference USA performer in 2013, Wiggins recorded 26 catches for 372 yards and a personal-best four TDs for a unit which ranked 11th nationally in pass offense. He enjoyed his top individual effort with a five-reception, 142-yard, three-score outing against league foe UAB at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Nov. 16. A year earlier, Wiggins caught 25 throws for 208 yards while playing in all 13 contests.
The Durham native's top statistical season was in 2011 with 29 grabs for 432 yards - an average of nearly 15 yards per reception. His 84-yard TD catch against UCF on Nov. 19 still ranks as the fourth-longest in East Carolina history.
Wiggins, who earned a bachelor's degree in communications from ECU in May, 2013, joins former Pirate tight end Justin Jones on the Patriots' current roster and is one of five East Carolina players who have signed confirmed free agent contracts thus far.
