GREENVILLE, N.C. - After leading all East Carolina defenders in sacks, tackles for lost yardage, fumble recoveries and quarterback pressures a year ago, senior outside linebacker Derrell Johnson has earned inclusion on the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Defensive Watch List according to a release by the organization Monday.
Johnson, who is one of 41 players on the CFPA's Linebacker Trophy Watch List, was an All-Conference USA performer for the Pirates last fall. He stood among the league's top 10 with 7.0 sacks and netted 11.0 overall stops behind the line of scrimmage while starting all 13 contests. In addition, the Baltimore prep product was credited with a pair of fumble recoveries, keyed a pass rush with eight pressures and logged 62 total tackles - 27 solo.
During his three-year career, which began as an end in ECU's former 4-3 scheme during his freshman campaign in 2010, Johnson has tallied 141 stops. He will open the 2013 season with a streak of 36-straight starts and a run of 25 consecutive contests with at least one tackle.
"Congratulations to Derrell Johnson on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Defensive Awards Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Heading into his senior season at East Carolina, Johnson will be one of the top defensive players in the nation to watch."
Johnson joins teammate Shane Carden (2013 CFPA Quarterback Trophy Watch List) on the organization's preseason honor roll.

All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and twenty-one have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
