GREENVILLE, N.C. - Three of East Carolina's all-time scorers (Jeff Heath, Chris Johnson and Kevin Miller) have been named by the fans as members of the All-Time Special Teams unit during a recent vote celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Joining the trio selected to the first and second-team are Matt Dodge, Dwayne Harris, John Jett and Henry "Gizmo" Williams.
First-Team Special Teams
Punter - John Jett (1988-91)
Enshrined into ECU Hall of Fame in 2007 ... Four-year letterwinner after walking on in 1988 ... Led the Pirates in punting all four years and graduated holding two of the three best season punting averages in school history ... Member of the 1991 Peach Bowl championship team ... Named second-team All-South Independent and received honorable mention All-America honors as a senior ... Spent 11 seasons in the National Football League after signing a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys in 1993 ... Won a pair of Super Bowls (XXVII/1993 and XXX/1995) with the Cowboys before ending his career in 2003 with the Detroit Lions.
Place Kicker - Kevin Miller (1999-2002)
Four-year letterwinner ... Set then all-time scoring record in 2002 (287 points) ... Three-time semifinalist (1999, 2001-02) for the Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the nation's top place kicker ... Earned Conference USA All-Freshman Team and Football News Freshman All-America accolades in 1999 ... Second-Team All C-USA honors in 2002 ... Connected on 52 of 71 (73.2 pct.) career field goal attempts and 131 of 136 career extra points ... During his four-year career, he inked his name on 16 ECU kicking and scoring records.
Punt Returner - Dwayne Harris (2007-10)
Two-time All-Conference USA selection as a punt returner (2007, 2010) ... Ranked sixth among all league punt returners (8.1 ypr) as a freshman ... Returned 31 punts for 250 yards with a season-long of 46 against UTEP ... Three years later was named First-Team All C-USA as a punt returner bringing back 19 punts for 222 yards (11.7 ypr) ... His career-high 56-yard return against UAB set up the game-winning score and was the longest punt return for a Pirate since Travis Williams' 69-yard runback against Memphis in 2004 ... Ranked among active FBS leaders at the end of his career in punt returns (12th/51) and punt return yards (16th/479) ... His 9.4 career ypr is currently tied for eighth all-time at ECU.
Kick Returner - Chris Johnson (2004-07)
A 2007 First-Team All-America selection as a return specialist by Pro Football Weekly - the first Pirate to earn top national honors since 1999 ... Also named to the CollegeFootballNews.com and SI.com All-America squads (honorable mention) ... Three-time All-Conference USA selection as a kick return specialist (2004, 06-07) ... Returned 115 kickoffs for 2,715 yards during his four-year career - both school records ... His 23.6 career KOR average is tied for seventh in the school's record books ... Also set or tied four other single-game, season or career marks as a return specialist ... Brought back a pair of 96-yard returns for touchdowns (Southern Miss/2006, UCF/2007) ... As a junior ranked fourth among C-USA returners with a 23.0 average, which also stood 43rd nationally ... During his senior campaign was named C-USA Media Special Teams Player-of-the-Year ... Ranked 18th among FBS players in kickoff return average (28.03) ... Finished regular season ranked among NCAA active career leaders (FBS) in kickoff return yards (2nd) and kick off return yards per game (9th) ... Earned All-America honors by six different agencies as a senior ... First-Team All-Conference USA selection in 2009 after finishing second nationally with a 45.8 punting average ... Ranks second all-time with a 43.6 career punt average ... Led C-USA in punt yards in 2007 and 2009 (3,069), while ranking second in 2008 (3,207) ... Drafted in the seventh round by the New York Giants in 2010.
Place Kicker - Jeff Heath (1982-85)
Enshrined into ECU Hall of Fame in 2001 ... Became ECU's all-time scorer in 1985 with 251 points, where he now stands third... Ranks second all-time at ECU in career field goals made (53) and fifth in PATs (92) ... Six career field goals of 50-or more yards ... Set an NCAA record for longest average distance of field goals made in a game with 49.5 yards at Texas-Arlington in 1982.
Punt Returner/Kick Returner - Henry "Gizmo" Williams (1983-84) - Punt and Kick Returner
Second-Team All-South Independent selection in 1983 after leading the nation in kick return yards (31.1) ... Scored four special teams touchdowns (2/PR, 2/KOR) as a junior ... Returned a 56 yard punt and 99 yard kickoff for a pair of scores at Florida State ... Ranks third all-time in KOR average (25.7) and eighth in punt return average (9.4) ... Performed his trademark front flip in the end zone each time he scored a touchdown ... Played one year in the NFL (Philadelphia Eagles, '89) and 15 seasons in the Canadian Football League ... Two-time Grey Cup Champion (1987, 1993) ... Enshrined into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2006.
