Fourth-Year Head Coach Ruffin McNeill
Aug. 11, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - A day after conducting its initial scrimmage of fall camp, East Carolina returned to Hight Field at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Sunday morning for a two-hour workout in shells.
"It was a good competitive day after a physical scrimmage," head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "Our practices are very physical no matter what we have on (shells or full pads), and today was no exception. The guys were a little sluggish, which is to be expected, but they pushed through it and I was proud of their effort and execution today."
Following film evaluation of Saturday's contest, McNeill said he was pleased with the team's effort and with the blocking and tackling from the offense and defense.
"After watching the film, I thought the offense did a good job moving the ball down the field," McNeill explained. "The offensive line did a great job of coming off the line and creating momentum. Defensively, I liked the way we moved to the ball as a unit and I thought we had some big stops on third down. I really liked the execution on Saturday. The goal is to put consistent days together, strengthen the things we did well, and work on the weaknesses whether it's in the individual or team periods."
On Sunday, McNeill and his staff devoted a total of 30 minutes to team-on-team work after the offense and defense spent nearly 20 minutes in skeleton drills. The offensive skeleton work centered around third down possession while additional time was spent running screens and working on the quick game.
"We came out of the scrimmage relatively healthy, just had few nicks and your minor bumps and bruises, but we will get those guys rehabbed, back healthy and on the field soon," McNeill said.
The Pirates will endure their second of three two-a-day schedules Monday morning and afternoon before observing their first off day of camp Tuesday. ECU will return to the practice complex for a single session Wednesday and head into scrimmage preparation with its final two-a-day of the preseason Thursday.
After missing a majority of work last week, including Saturday's scrimmage because of a concussion, senior DE Lee Pegues was cleared and returned to practice Sunday ... The Pirates came through the first contest relatively unscathed as only junior NT/DE Chrishon Rose (left knee) missed action Sunday because of an injury suffered during the latter stages of the scrimmage ... Senior RB Vintavious Cooper (illness) also was sidelined Sunday, joining freshman Randall Anderson (left toe), sophomore OL Chaz Lowery (left knee), senior DE Justin Dixon (left knee) and senior outside receiver Lance Ray (right leg), who all had existing injuries.
Saturday's Scrimmage: 8:45 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. and 4:15 - 6:00 p.m.
Season Opener: Aug. 31 vs. Old Dominion in Greenville (7 p.m.)
