GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina continued preparations for Saturday's scrimmage by completing its fall two-a-day schedule with a pair of workouts at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Thursday. The Pirates opened the day with a two-hour session in full pads before going 90-plus minutes in shells during the afternoon.

Head coach Ruffin McNeill and his staff stressed redzone and goal line production on both sides of the ball during the morning. ECU's team-on-team segment featured matchups of preseason depth chart personnel with all snaps during the 22-minute period taken inside the 20-yard line.

"One of the major areas we wanted to emphasize in the morning was our redzone play," McNeill said. "I also thought we got in some good reps on special team situations, most notably kickoffs and punts. In general, it was a good work day for us."

The Pirate defense held the offense to a pair of Warren Harvey field goals and just one touchdown, a Shane Carden-to-Dayon Arrington strike, during five redzone possessions to open the segment before delivering a four-play goal line stand at the three-yard line to conclude the action.

"We have many ongoing position battles and that competition is exactly where I want it to be," McNeill explained. I feel comfortable with any of our five running backs and the battle to be the starting quarterback is still very tight. Our offensive line needs to work a little bit more as a collective unit. I tell them I want to see a nickel and not five pennies out there.

"The defensive line continues to play well, I've been impressed with the way Gabriel Woullard has hit the ground running and Damon Magazu continues to be the leader of the secondary at free safety."

The Pirates returned to more of a traditional schedule during the afternoon, focusing their attention on fundamentals and execution. As has been the case during the first pair of two-a-days, the second session also included an emphasis on looks from first opponent Appalachian State.

ECU will practice Friday morning to finalize prep work for the team's second, and final, intra-squad scrimmage of the fall Saturday morning.
