GREENVILLE, N.C. - Redshirt freshman running back Chris Hairston's 12-yard touchdown rush, sophomore inside receiver Danny Webster's six-yard scoring catch and senior cornerback Jacobi Jenkins' 38-yard interception return were notables in East Carolina's second, and final, scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

The Pirate offense also benefitted from the big play, contributing three gains of 40-plus yards, while the defense registered five tackles for lost yardage and surrendered just two third-down conversions during the abbreviated 40-play contest.

"There were some positive things that happened on both sides of the ball," head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "I thought we also had a good special teams period before we got started as part of preliminary pre-game routine."

Senior running back Reggie Bullock made his three carries count, averaging 18 yards per attempt during a 54-yard effort that included a scamper for 46. He was also used as a receiver out of the backfield and hauled in a pass for 16 yards to account for a combined 70 offensive yards. As a unit, ECU's stable of backs carried 13 times for 98 yards - an average of 7.5 per carry.

After opening the scrimmage by completing his first four consecutive passes, junior quarterback Rio Johnson finished with a seven-of-nine, 104-yard performance. Senior Brad Wornick also had only two incompletions, hitting five-of-seven tosses for 64 yards, which included the TD strike to Webster on his second possession of the morning.

Sophomore Shane Carden, another candidate competing for ECU's starting signal-caller job, attempted only three passes but was effective leading the Pirates to three first downs and a touchdown during his initial series.

Webster led all pass catchers with three receptions for 24 yards and a score. True freshman Jabril Solomon had a pair of grabs for 46 yards, including an acrobatic 41-yarder, to top the receiving yardage list. A total of 10 players were credited with at least one catch during the action, including junior Reese Wiggins who made his only reception count for 41 yards.

Sophomore safety Detric Allen topped all defenders with four tackles, which included three solo hits. Class and position mate Lamar Ivey was also active in the secondary with a pair of pass break-ups, while another sophomore, inside linebacker Robert Huckabee, tallied three stops.

ECU's special teams unit also contributed as sophomore Warren Harvey drilled a 22-yard field goal and tacked on two extra points.

Although it averaged 7.8 yards per play during the officiated scrimmage, the Pirate offense was also knocked back twice on holding and a false start penalties, and suffered a loss of 18 yards on an errant snap.

"We had some penalties and some snapping problems today that we have to correct," McNeill explained. "We haven't had to deal with those during the spring and in camp so far, so I'm confident we'll get it addressed pretty quickly. From an overall standpoint though, I was pleased with the guys and we got out pretty healthy, I think."

The Pirates will take Sunday off before returning to the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Monday morning for their final day of preseason camp before classes start on the ECU campus Tuesday morning.
