Nov. 8, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior offensive lineman Adhem Elsawi and junior placekicker Warren Harvey have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 First-Team, according to an announcement Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Elsawi, who earned his bachelor's degree in biology in the Spring of 2013, is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree in psychology where he maintains a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). The Saratoga Springs, N.Y. native was a First-Team Preseason All-Conference USA selection by the leagues coaches and has started seven games at right tackle. He has helped the Pirate offense produce 476 yards or more of total offense in five games and since 2011 has provided pass protection for 12 300-yard passing efforts.
In the classroom, both Elsawi and Harvey have replicated one another's academic honors. Each player is a six-time ECU Athletics Director's Honor Roll and three-time C-USA Honor Roll choice, in addition receiving two C-USA Academic Medals, respectively.
Harvey, a construction management major with a 3.78 cumulative GPA, leads East Carolina in scoring this season with 72 points connecting on 12-of-21 FGs and 36-of-37 PATs, which rank among the C-USA leaders through eight games. Named to the Preseason Lou Groza Award Watch List, Harvey had connected on 86-straight PATs, which ranked as the seventh longest streak in the NCAA before missing at FIU.
By making the first-team, both Elsawi and Harvey are eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors.
To be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. No student-athlete is eligible until he has completed one full calendar year at his current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
The Pirates (6-2, 4-1 C-USA) return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they play host to Tulsa (2-6, 1-3 C-USA) inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3:45 p.m. (EST).
