GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina sophomore defensive lineman Matt Milner has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team according to an announcement from the league office Friday. A physics major with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, Milner is the lone underclassmen on the all-league team and just one of three repeat picks from the 2010 unit.
The Raleigh native has been selected to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice and received a pair of Commissioner’s Academic Medals. Milner was the football program’s Jerry T. Brooks Academic Achievement Award winner for the 2010 season and is a four-time ECU Chancellor’s List honoree. He was one of East Carolina’s 2010 winners of the Merck General Chemistry Achievement Award, which is presented to the top students who have gone through ECU's CHEM 1150/1160 General Chemistry Track. Milner was among six chosen from approximately 600 students based on grade-point average and results of the American Chemical Society's first semester general chemistry standardized exam.
In November, Milner was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team and is eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors. The All-America squads will be announced Thursday, Dec. 8.
On the field, Milner served as a starting defensive end for the second-straight campaign. He booked 37 tackles with 11 solo hits and 4.0 stops which resulted in lost yardage. During the matchup with Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech on Sept. 10, Milner finished two tackles short of his career high with a season-best six hits and was credited with two half tackles for lost yardage.
Versus Southern Miss, Milner tallied five stops and made four hits in the opening quarter. He recovered his third career fumble during the second frame against UAB and registered his first quarterback hurry of the year during the initial series of the contest against the Blazers. In the home finale against UCF, he combined with Jake Geary to sack Jeff Godfrey for a three-yard loss in the third quarter. A week earlier at UTEP, Milner booked 1.5 tackles for lost yardage in the first half as he dropped the Miners’ Nathan Jeffery (-1 yard) and Joe Banyard (-6 yards) for losses in the second quarter.
