PINEHURST, N.C.-- SMU shot a five-over par 293 on day one of the 2007 Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Sunday to sit atop the leaderboard one stroke ahead of second-place Mississippi.

The 54-hole event is being held at 7,035 yard par 72 Centennial Course No. 8 at Pinehurst Resort and is being co-hosted by East Carolina University and Indiana University. Co-host Indiana is tied with UNC Greensboro for third place at nine-over par (297). East Carolina is tied with Marquette for 11th place after shooting an opening round of 18-over-par (306).

Big Ten Conference members Michigan (+10), Penn State (+11) and Wisconsin (+13) and Colonial Athletic Association member Virginia Commonwealth are all within (+13) within eight strokes of the lead.

Marshall's Trent Schambach ended the first round with a one stroke lead over Michigan's Bill Rankins. Schambach fired a three-under par 69, while Rankins carded a two-under par 70. Four other players finished at one-under after 18 holes of play. Playing as an individual, ECU sphomore Markus Leandersson shot a one-over par 73 Sunday and is one of 15 individuals wihtin four strokes of the lead heading into Monday's second round.

Three ECU golfers completed the first round with a three-over par 72. Senior Robin Smith, junior Andre Thorsen and freshman Tanner Briele are all tied for 21st place, six shots back of Schambach.

 

 

Pirate freshman Tripp Brizendine is nine-over after 18 holes, while junior Chris Ault is 10-over.

Monday's second round will begin with fixed tee times starting at 10 a.m.
