GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team shot an even-par 288 to complete the first round of 38th Annual Furman Intercollegiate with a share of second place Friday at the par 72 Furman Golf Club.

The Pirate are tied with Charleston Southern and trail Elon (-1) by a single stroke through 18 holes of the 54-hole event.

ECU junior Andre Thorsen fired a four-under 68 to earn a first place tie in the individual standings with Elon's Justin Newton and Stuart Carrihill of Charleston Southern.

Pirate senior Robin Smith completed the first round with a one-under 71 and is tied for eighth place, three strokes behind the leaders.

Sophomore Markus Leandersson finished the first 18 with a one-over 73. Junior Chris Ault finished at four-over par, while junior Martin Nicholls was six-over.

Second round action tees off at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with teams beginning play at No. 1 and No. 10.
