Watkins Wins Medalist Honors At River Landing
April 4, 2010
WALLACE, N.C. --- East Carolina sophomore David Watkins shot a five-under 67 in the final round of the River Landing Intercollegiate Saturday to earn individual medalist honors. He finished the 54-hole event at nine-under (71-69-67=207). It was his second tournament victory of the season.
Watkins entered the final round two strokes behind leader Josh Brock of UNC Wilmington. Brock held a one stroke lead after two rounds, but watched Watkins card his best 18-hole score of the year to overtake him. Brock (69-69-70=208) finished one stroke behind Watkins in second-place.
Led by Brock and junior Ryan Sullivan, UNCW edged North Carolina by two strokes to claim the team title. The Seahawks and Tar Heels began the day tied for first, but UNCW carded a six-under 282 to separate itself from its instate foe.
East Carolina fired a final round team total of 286 to earn a third-place finish. Sophomores Harold Varner and Jake Colley each finished in the top 20 to help the Pirates claim their sixth top five finish of the year.
Varner shot two-over par Saturday to finish at one-under (72-69-74=215) for the tournament, tied for 15th. Colley carded a one-over 73 to shoot even-par (69-74-73=216) for the event and tied for 19th.
ECU will return to the links Friday, April 9, in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh.
