CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The East Carolina men's golf team is in seventh place after the opening round of play at the Cavalier Classic taking place at Birdwood Golf Course. The Pirates shot nine-over 297 and trail first-place South Carolina in the field of 18 teams by 11 strokes. The Gamecocks shot two-under 286 to hold a six-stroke advantage over second-place Virginia heading into Sunday's final round.

ECU was led by freshman David Watkins, who is tied for 21st, at one-over 73. Senior Andre Thorsen is tied for 28th at two-over 74. Sophomore Warren Straub and freshman Jake Colley each fired three-over 75, while senior Markus Leandersson carded six-over 78.

UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock leads the field at five-under 67. He had six birdies during his round and did not record a bogey until the 18th hole.

South Carolina was led by George Bryan IV's two-under 70. Three of his teammates shot even-par 72 to help the Gamecocks to the first round lead.

The final round of the Cavalier Classic starts Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at Birdwood Golf Course.
