EDMOND, Okla. --- The East Carolina men's golf team sits in 13th-place after round one of play at the 2014 Conference USA Championship at Oak Tree Country Club. The Pirates fired a 28-over 308 Sunday and trail first-place Tulsa by 20 strokes entering second round play Monday.
Sophomores Al Dickens and George Kilgore posted the team's lowest scores of the day with each shooting 3-over 73 on the par 70, 6,861-yard course. Dickens stood 5-over through 16 holes before sinking consecutive birdie putts on 17 and 18 to improve his score by two strokes. Kilgore stood 1-under through 12 holes, but was hampered by four straight bogeys to fall to 3-over.
Senior Eric Brady fired a 10-over 80 and is tied for 53rd, while sophomore Jacob Hicks is tied for 60th at 12-over 82. Fellow sophomore Wes Conover was disqualified for signing an incorrect card. He signed a scorecard with a five on No. 16 when he actually shot a six. The card had already been signed and turned in by the time he realized his mistake and brought it to the attention of tournament officials.
Due to inclement weather in the area, tee times were pushed back four hours, with the first pairing teeing off at 12:42 p.m. EDT. Skies were clear during the round, but players faced winds up to 25 mph throughout competition.
The Golden Hurricane (288) currently holds a two stroke lead over second-place UAB (290). Charlotte is in third place (291), followed by Middle Tennessee and Rice who are tied for fourth (293). Tulsa's Logan McCracken holds the individual lead at 3-under 67.
