CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The East Carolina men's golf team placed seventh in its season opener after recording a 10-over par 298 in Sunday's final round of the 15-team Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The Pirates finished with a three-round tally of 19-over 883 (291-294-298) at the 7,242-yard, par-72 Finley Golf Course.
ECU junior Eric Brady fired a team-low 1-over 217 (72-72-73) to finish tied for 12th. Senior Zach Edmondson completed the tournament tied for 34th at 7-over 223 (74-74-75) with junior Ryan Eibner finishing one stroke behind at 8-over 224 (75-72-77) tied for 40th. ECU freshmen Jacob Hicks (71-76-78) and George Kilgore (76-72-77) tied for 45th at 9-over 225.
Freshman Stephen Lavenets tied Brady for the Pirates' lowest round of the day with a 73, but finished his first collegiate tournament at 11-over 227 (74-80-73).
Twenty-first ranked Duke claimed the team title by six strokes over second-place North Carolina. The Blue Devils fired a three-round total of 8-under 856 (285-282-289) and placed five players in the top-15. Albin Choi of N.C. State won individual medalist honors with an 11-under 205 (66-71-68)
The Pirates will be back in action Sept. 24-25 when they travel to Manakin-Sabot, Va., for the VCU Shootout.
